SoCal: Evacuations Underway as Massive 60+ sq mile Wildfires Rage Out of Control Amidst Santa Ana Winds

Evacuations were underway as a massive wildfire raged out of control and engulfed homes in Pacific Palisades, California, on Tuesday.

According to AccuWeather, wind gusts reached up to 65 miles per hour in Southern California on Tuesday.

Shocking video of a ‘fire tornado’ was posted to X.

People panicked after they got stuck in traffic trying to flee the fire and abandoned their cars on Sunset Blvd.

The cars were being bulldozed to make room for emergency vehicles.

No water from the hydrants just boggles my mind.

Maybe this will be a wake up call to repentance for a lot of libs.

LJ, glad to hear you are safe, you came to mind this AM as I was praying for rain out there.

My oldest daughter, estranged, lives in North Hollywood. Pray that God will change her heart and she’ll repent.

Father in heaven above, bring rain to Los Angeles and extinguish the fires, change the hearts and minds of the lost. Protect Your people, in Jesus name Amen

We've had tons of rain. The Governor was given a bill to sign that would have replenished water into our reservoirs, he did not sign the bill.
Instead he chose to use our water to dump into the ocean to save fish.
The reservoirs have been low and the ones in the Los Angeles area ran dry so water couldn't get into the hydrants and they went dry.
This Governor is incompetent or he's deliberately destroying California.
I would take the second one. He's been destroying California little by little since he became Governor.
We've lost millions of California residents to other States while being replaced by millions of illegal immigrants.

Oh, I know, have been reading all about the water issues and Newsom's incompetence, deliberate or not. The enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy, and he seems to have plenty of willing tools at his disposal. Praying God will turn it for good somehow, in the long run.

Guess at least some of the people in P.P. didn't have insurance

Some people choose to self-insure because they have the means to do that. That can be hard to understand for some who've never accumulated much wealth.

State Farm stopped ensuring around 1500 properties in Pacific Palisades. I'd venture to guess not all of those were able to re-insure... This will probably be a catastrophic loss for many, a loss from which they'll either have to start over again or give up.

My heart breaks. It's like Maui all over again. There is NO WAY it will just be 5 deaths any more than Maui was for the same reason. Not everyone is physically able to pick up and run during evacuations. Especially bad when the police were directing the cars to go right into gridlock and then people had to abandon cars and run.

I saw the smoking ruins of the Palisades, and the fire pics in the other areas. This is a huge largely preventable mess. Newsom should be charged with manslaughter for being able to prevent this. Him, the mayor and everyone else who could have done things to prevent it.

I saw one celeb mention the insurance being dropped 4 months ago and he wanted their reasoning made PUBLIC because it would be using Newsom and the Mayor's own stats to explain why the risk became too much.

I live in fire country and for fire fighters to run out of water is unconscionable. Let alone not cutting the dry brush- that is EASY. It's always done inside city limits in fire prone areas here.

I think we will see class action lawsuits against the insurers for dropping people without enough notice, subpoenas for the Insurance data as to why, and lawsuits against the city and the state on behalf of people who lost loved ones let alone property.

Rose are you breathing ok? How about our other California members? The smoke is rough.
There's not too much smoke where I am about 45 minutes away from the multiple fires in LA.
We did have a local fire but I think it's out.
We just have a very bad wind storm. The Santa Ana winds are just as bad here as in Los Angeles.
I had to go out this morning to get lab work done.
There was a Big Rig with a trailer that got thrown over a freeway embankment by the winds. The driver was trapped in his cab and the fire department had to use the "jaws of life" to get him out of his truck.
There's been numerous truck drivers that have been jackknifed by the winds in the last two days.
Staying inside as much as possible. The wind is really bad.
I imagine it's making it very hard for firefighters to contain the fires

California wildfires live updates: 6 killed, Palisades Fire grows as Sunset Fire spreads through Hollywood Hills, 180,000 people evacuated

The deadly fires roaring through Los Angeles County continued Thursday, leaving at least six people dead, over 1,000 structures destroyed and around 180,000 people forced to evacuate, and prompting thousands of firefighters to descend on the region to try to extinguish the flames. The Palisades Fire, which has burned more than 17,000 acres, has become the most destructive wildfire to ever hit L.A.

“Damage assessments are ongoing at the Palisades fire. Preliminary reports estimate the damage or destroyed structures to be in the thousands,” Los Angeles city Fire Chief Kristin Crowley said during a news conference Thursday morning.

According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, in addition to the Palisades Fire, four other blazes are currently burning: the Eaton Fire, which has torched 10,600 acres so far; the Hurst Fire, which has burned around 855 acres but is 10% contained; the Lidia Fire, which has grown to 348 acres but has 60% containment; and the Sunset Fire, around 43 acres. Aside from the Lidia and Hurst fires, officials say these wildfires are 0% contained.

The Sunset Fire erupted in the densely populated Hollywood Hills late Wednesday, prompting more evacuations in areas like Hollywood Boulevard and Runyon Canyon Park.

Same as many municipalities. Cheaper to self-insure than pay premiums (over time).

If someone were self-insured for motor vehicle in Missouri, he or she had a few hoops to jump through, and then got an "insurance card" that had an administratively-generated number and some other information on it. They needed the card in case they got stopped by law enforcement or had an accident and had to show proof of insurance.

I don't see how dumping all that freshwater into the ocean helps or saves anything, as it desalinates a SALTY body of water.

Conservation of water and proper recycling, re-cleaning, and re-use makes a LOT more sense, especially in a desert environment :tap:

Other than entertainment, what is produced in LA?

Wonder if the wildfire threat is why some of the movie industry relocated to Sarasota, FL?
(and immediately started ruining it)

Praying all these fires don't make food, especially produce and meat, more expensive.

Los Angeles is important for the economy.
Here's a sample of the importance Los Angeles is not only for California but for the nation and internationally.

Los Angeles County is one of the most dynamic economies in the world, with a fast-growing and immense high-tech industry, world-leading creative economy, tremendous strength in aerospace and advanced transportation, the nation’s largest manufacturing base, the nation’s largest international trade industry, and a rapidly increasing amount of venture capital investment in startups.

With over a dozen major industries, the L.A. region is also known for innovation as creative collisions occur where industries overlap, driving new business concepts and entirely new sectors, making L.A. County the creative capital of the nation. All this success can be traced to our highly diverse, skilled workforce and visionaries who are reinventing everything from transit to translational medicine. As venture capitalist Mark Suster said, “What I love about L.A. is it represents the best our country has to offer. L.A. is a leader amongst the most cohesive large cities I can think of in the world.” L.A. offers far more than a beautiful climate, hikeable mountains and sunny beaches.

Remember when we had the lockdowns in 2020?
The supply chain was effected and it hurt the economy for the whole country.
Part of what hurt us was that a lot of our supplies and products that we need come through Los Angeles.
Ships dock at the LA ports and then the shipments are unloaded and truckers pick up shipments to take to Warehouses and from there it's distributed across the country.
For months the supply shipments were stuck at the ports because of the lockdowns and there was nobody to unload and trucks couldn't get their shipments to take cross country.
Anyway Los Angeles ports are needed for our supply chain to get distributed.
Can you imagine if the fires burn the ports of call and we couldn't get our essential goods?
Los Angeles is more than the entertainment capitol of the world.

Short article explaining why

California insurance crisis: Why are home insurance companies leaving California?

"State Farm, Allstate and Farmers are among the home insurance companies that are pulling back from the California home insurance market. Risks associated with climate change are creating a home insurance crisis in California, but homeowners still have options."

"Reinsurance challenges: Reinsurance is a type of insurance that insurance carriers buy to protect themselves from large losses. The challenging reinsurance market has worsened in recent years, making it harder for insurance companies to cover the risks associated with California properties and ensure adequate claims paying capacity.
Unless home insurance companies can find ways to balance costs, they will stop offering coverage.

"California is the only state in the country that does not allow insurers’ rates to be based upon their actual reinsurance costs," Rex Frazier, president of the Personal Insurance Federation of California says.

California lawmakers have moved to make changes that will require all insurance companies that do business in the state to write in high-risk areas and will allow them to pass reinsurance costs on to consumers. That will help stabilize the market but will also mean increased rates.

And now, State Farm gets to reap the benefits of an extra night of free TV advertising, since the Vikings-Rams game has been moved to State Farm Stadium in Arizona due to the wildfires. Wonder if they'll take some of the extra revenue and use it to help their former policy-holders, who weren't able to obtain insurance elsewhere? Even if it's "just" clean-up and clearance? Or donate to charities/funds actually helping (and not getting rich off of people's misfortune)?
