SoCal: Evacuations Underway as Massive 60+ sq mile Wildfires Rage Out of Control Amidst Santa Ana Winds

Evacuations were underway as a massive wildfire raged out of control and engulfed homes in Pacific Palisades, California, on Tuesday.

According to AccuWeather, wind gusts reached up to 65 miles per hour in Southern California on Tuesday.

Shocking video of a ‘fire tornado’ was posted to X.

People panicked after they got stuck in traffic trying to flee the fire and abandoned their cars on Sunset Blvd.

The cars were being bulldozed to make room for emergency vehicles.

You mean the lowest paid water employee and/or public works employee couldn't be sent out there with a bunch of duct tape, and maybe some tarp and adhesive, to effect a temporary repair (that probably would have lasted a very long time, because, you know, done by the "little people," who try hard to do a good job day in and day out)? :tap:

LA warned the worst is yet to come

Police in Los Angeles have arrested a burglar who was dressed as a firefighter while looting abandoned homes in evacuated neighbourhoods.
Authorities have deployed additional National Guard personnel as instances of break-and-enters soar, with 29 people nabbed on Sunday alone.
LA County Sheriff Robert Luna described his shock at the tactics of one robber.
“I saw a gentleman who looked like a firefighter, and I asked if he was OK because he was sitting down, and I didn’t realise we had him in handcuffs,” Mr Luna told CBS News.

Wonder . . .

Had a no-parking-on-the-street order been issued there? Had sufficient time passed to allow everyone to move their vehicles?

Were the cars potentially interfering with possible evacuation and/or first responder movement/fire fighting?

Did the cars belong to evacuees from elsewhere, who parked them in Santa Monica hoping they'd be safe there, while they evacuated in another vehicle?

Assuming the fires don't get where those cars are and the owners find the tickets when they return, they do have recourse in court (or earlier if they contact the Prosecuting Attorney's office).

"As wildfires continue to ravage Southern California, local law enforcement has arrested numerous people attempting to take advantage of the situation.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to Deadline that two individuals were arrested at the Vice President’s Brentwood home at 4:40am on Saturday. Ultimately, they could not prove the individuals were involved in burglary, however they were detained for “violating curfew.”
As of late last week, a curfew has been imposed on evacuation zones from 6pm to 6am to curb looting and unrest."

LA Fire Evacuees Told No Chance of Return Until at Least Thursday

"Tens of thousands of people forced from their homes by enormous fires raking Los Angeles will not be able to return for at least four days, officials said Sunday.
Frustrated evacuees have formed lines at checkpoints hoping to get into no-go zones barricaded off amid the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire.
Many are desperate to get back to homes they had to flee with just a few moments' notice to pick up medicines or clothes they did not have a chance to grab."

Strong winds return, creating 'dangerous situation' as LA fires rage

SANTA MONICA, Calif. – Powerful Santa Ana winds returned to the Los Angeles area on Tuesday, threatening to reverse some of the progress made in the battle against deadly wildfires that have destroyed entire neighborhoods and forced tens of thousands to flee their homes.

Winds of 45 to 70 mph were forecast through the midweek, with peak wind gusts expected between Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service, which issued critical red flag warnings across much of southwestern California.

With the combination of high winds, low humidity and relentless drought conditions, the weather service office in Los Angeles warned of a “particularly dangerous situation" for the northern Los Angeles County and Ventura County areas, adding, "this setup is about as bad as it gets."

Scores of firefighters, including additional personnel from Canada, Mexico, and other nearby U.S. states, were combating the fires from the air and on the ground. Officials worried the high winds could further expand the Palisades and Eaton blazes as well as fuel the formation and growth of new wildfires.

At least 24 people have been killed in the fires, according to the Los Angeles medical examiner's office. The wildfires have destroyed or damaged more than 12,000 homes, businesses, and other structures as officials ordered over 92,000 people to flee their homes.

Critical to extremely critical fire weather continues for coastal Southern California

Extremely critical fire weather conditions persist in southern California due to strong Santa Ana winds, posing a significant threat of rapid fire growth through Wednesday. Red Flag Warnings remain in effect for Ventura and Los Angeles counties, with localized gusts reaching 115 km/h (70 mph).

The Eaton and Palisades fires have caused significant destruction in Southern California since January 8, leaving at least 24 people dead, as of January 14.

The Palisades Fire has burned over 9 600 ha (23 713 acres), resulting in eight fatalities and the destruction of more than 5 300 structures. It is currently 14% contained.

The Eaton Fire has consumed approximately 5 700 ha (14 117 acres), leading to 16 deaths and damaging or destroying around 7  000 structures. Containment currently stands at 27%.
Combined, these fires have devastated an area totaling about 155 km2 (60 mi2).

L.A. Officials: Over 30 Still Missing as Crews Battle Eaton and Palisades Fires

The death toll is at 27, but around 30 people are still missing in the wildfire areas, Fox News reported on Thursday.

“We continue to work with multiple partners, not only in the recovery of remains, but then ultimately the identification of the deceased and then the notification to the next of kin,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said during a press conference, adding that evacuation orders were still in effect in those areas so that officials could search for more deceased victims.
“We have to hold for the right time and the right resources to process the scene correctly, and that’s going to take a little while. Please be patient with us,” he explained.

Officials have located 12 people safe, but there were still 31 missing persons cases, with over twenty in the Eaton Fire area and a few in the Palisades.

“Fire officials said the Eaton Fire has scorched an estimated 14,117 acres and is 55% contained as of Thursday. The Palisades Fire has consumed approximately 23,713 acres and is 22% contained,” the Fox article read.

Fire-ravaged Southern California braces for gusty winds and heightened wildfire risk

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern Californians are bracing for gusty winds and a heightened risk of wildfires, less than two weeks after the outbreak of deadly blazes that have killed at least 27 people and charred thousands of homes.

The National Weather Service has issued a warning of a “ particularly dangerous situation ” for parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties from Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning due to low humidity and damaging Santa Ana winds. Gusts could peak at 70 mph (113 kph) along the coast and 100 mph (160 kph) in the mountains and foothills.

While firefighters are fairly confident the Eaton fire further inland will remain contained, there are concerns a new fire could break out with vegetation especially dry for this time of year, said Carlos Herrera, an Eaton fire spokesperson.

I thought the forecast for Santa Ana winds for tomorrow was going to impact Los Angeles if we are getting it here in my area.
Praying the wind gusts don't exacerbate the fire situation with new fires from the wind carrying burning embers to other areas and hinder the firefighters' desperate attempts to further contain the already existing fires. 🙏🙏🙏

Oh Rose, Praying for you and everyone down there! May God in His mercy calm the winds and help the firefighters.
Thank you. Here locally so far no active fires but we are in a Red Flag Warning for potential fires and power outages.
Right now the wind is blowing reportedly at 17mph but feels like it's more than that. The gusts are really bad right now.

I'm praying for the firefighters in Los Angeles because the winds are going to be much worse there than here and likely will make containing the fires very difficult and the fires will only spread.

It's really odd. We aren't historically in Santa Ana Wind season. They typically are active the most in the Fall. This is really unusual to have these winds at this time of year.
Wind in generally is expected, but the Santa Ana winds are not usually this bad this time in December.
This kind of wind is so destructive I've never liked being out in them.
When my daughter was in second grade I was walking her to school in the Santa Ana winds and the wind literally picked her up and threw her onto someone's yard.
It was scary, mostly for her.

Firefighters Extinguish Blaze in Los Angeles’ Griffith Park

Firefighters were on the scene working to “quickly control” the fire, which was south of Griffith Observatory. According to the Los Angeles Times, smoke from the fire could be seen from nearby in Hollywood.

Griffith Park is home to such L.A. landmarks as Griffith Observatory, the Greek Theatre, the Los Angeles Zoo and the Hollywood Sign. It also contains the Travel Town Museum as well as a merry-go-round.

According to the National Weather Service, Southern California is at “extremely critical risk of fire weather” through Tuesday. Expected are wind gusts of 50-70 miles per hour along the coasts and in the valleys, and 60-100 miles per hour in the foothills and the mountains.

More than 250,000 customers may lose power in a public safety shutoff, according to local reports. More than 5,800 customers had already had their power shut off around 1 p.m. Monday.
