Gift of Tongues Explained

Cheeky200386

Well-known
This has got to be the best concise teaching on what the Gift of Tongues actually are. Pastor Brandon Holthaus discusses Hebrew Idioms, the Greek and scripture to finally put to rest the debate of Speaking in Tongues.

Here is the 19 minute video:

I'll have to rewatch and see if I can find what you're referring to.

I could be wrong... don't want to watch it again. I don't usually watch videos but watched two today, this being one of them. With regards to the "up to three" it seemed like it was a blanket statement as opposed to applying in a church meeting. That thought led me me to think right to Pentecost and I asked the question that needed no answer. But even if Brandon didn't say church meetings he might have been referring to it.

If you listen to it again... did he say Tribulation Saints are indwelt with the Holy Spirit? I don't agree with that if he did.

Anyways, it was an interesting video. For the record, I'm not a cessationist, I've seen too much in my short life to lean that way.

I haven’t rewatched it yet. I’m not a cessationist either. I just believe tongues are known human languages, not the gibberish that is central in Charismania.

Probably not. I have a charismatic friend who would never accept any evidence against her beliefs of tongues. She also believes in declaring and decreeing prayers and binding Satan, sadly.
I have found these beliefs common amongst the charismania. Sprinkle in a bit of 'blab it and grab it' and a few bad Daystar televangelists and that pretty much sums up their theology.

These declaring, decreeing and binding "laws of attraction" are gnostic beliefs rooted in Eastern Mysticism, theosophy, and the occult. They include mystics/satanists such as Helena Blavatsky whom I believe influenced Aleister Crowley.

Agree! Gibberish does not edify anyone.
Absolutely. That's why Paul said that if anyone speaks in tongues in public there MUST be an interpreter (1 Corinthians 14:27-28). However, he also says that when spoken privately tongues does edify the speaker (1 Corinthians 14:4). Paul said that he thanked God that he spoke in tongues more than anyone else (1 Corinthians 14:18), but he then added ""Nevertheless, in the church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue." (1 Corinthians 14:19). Paul believed strongly in the value of tongues in the life of a believer, but was concerned about the unspiritual exercise of the gift among the Corinthians who ignorantly flaunted it as some proof of spiritual status ... much like many Pentecostals and Charismatics today.

Thanks for he video cheeky. I watched the video. And it would have been helpful i think for Brandon to provide a context for the main speaking in Mandarin. Like how was it a sign to Israel? For me, I would see that context in the first century of being a judgement against Israel was diverse languages as a kind of reversal of sorts of the Tower of Babel. And included in that would be the gentile nation languages God would use supernaturally affirming that the word of God will now go out to the gentile languages. We don't really hear all that much about people speaking in languages they never learned. If Brandon knows 1, it would be extremely rare. I don't know of anyone that knows anyone that speaks in an unlearned language. If that is true that there are people like that, does anyone on this forum know of any though?

I like Brandon although I don't always agree with him. His church did teach me that Matt 24:31 was the regathering of Israel physically from around the world. Which was kind of a game changer perspectives for me. So that man has made a significant effect on some of my views. But yeah, on this one speaking in unlearned languages to me is, from what i have seen, pretty uncommon. I might go as far as to say that is something we don't hear about occurring though.

Thanks for the video. It was helpful to see how he sees some things. I am glad his prophecy conference is not going to just be focusing on the dark stuff. I think that will be very beneficial his perspective on that. Looks like it will be interesting. Blessings.
