Quote of the Day

I’m listening to D.L. Moody’s audiobook How to Study the Bible. A little background, he is a preacher who traveled the world in the mid 1800s and was facing science vs. faith challenges of Darwin’s evolution. He was defending simply placing our faith in God’s Word in the face of the rising intellectual atheistic science. He was questioned about how he could have faith in Someone he can’t see or understand and he explains that though he doesn’t understand higher mathematics, he believes it is true; though he can’t explain astronomy, he believes it’s true.

He goes on to quote Pascal, “Human knowledge must be understood in order to be loved, but Divine knowledge must be loved to be understood.”

Moody goes on to explain how that’s the problem of modern critics of the Bible, they forgot how to make their brain a servant of their heart.

He also defended the inerrancy of Scripture, the rapture and Israel returning to her land.

Ben Shapiro is answering questions from his book club, regarding CS Lewis’ book The Screwtape Letters.

Q: Why does Lewis differentiate between ‘selfless’ and ‘unselfish’?

A: “In the case of being selfless, you have divested yourself of your interest.” [sic You are in Sunday school and someone you’ve been generous with when they needed the meal train, comes up to two of your mutual friends to invite them over to a special dessert, but doesn’t invite you — you do not have ruffled feathers, or invite yourself] “Unselfishness can become a vice, ‘I’m so interested in giving of myself, so interested in giving of myself…I’m in your business…I want to give of myself’ and ‘self is in the sentence there. In selflessness ‘self’ is not in the sentence.”

As Lewis famously said, "Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less."

I Heard this today and had to share the humor with a little truth behind it, but wasn't sure where to post, but because it's a quote I chose to post here ..........

John 3:16
For God
- the greatest being
So - the greatest degree
Loved - the greatest affection
The world - the greatest object of love
That He gave - the greatest act
His only - the greatest treasure
Begotten - the greatest relationship
Son - the greatest gift
That whosoever - the greatest company
Believeth- the greatest trust
In Him - the greatest object of faith
Should not perish - the greatest deliverance
But have - the greatest assurance
Everlasting - the greatest promise
Life - the greatest blessing

“Each word is the superlative use… such incredible power.”

~Chuck Missler

I’ve been listening to a church historian and pastor, Gavin Ortlund. He’s contrasting the RCC penance/confession system with assurance of salvation: “If you struggle with assurance of salvation, if you struggle with sin, hold onto a verse like Psalm 103:12, this is one of the promises of God. This applies to those who trust in Jesus. Claim that promise in your heart and understand that you don’t need anything other than what you already possess through faith in Christ to experience that. The Gospel is really that Good News. God loves you that much. Your sins really are, even yours, removed as far as east is from west from you as you trust in Jesus…”

“Nothing that we do can make us right with God, only what Jesus did. We accept that it’s 100% His work that creates salvation for us and we simply receive it by the empty hands of faith.”

“We should be careful that our own actions never become the object of our trust.”

Psalm 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our wrongdoings from us.

“Ordinary work, which is what most of us do most of the time, is ordained by God every bit as much as is the extraordinary. All work done for God is spiritual work and therefore not merely a duty but a holy privilege.”
~Elizabeth Elliot

"We may rest in the promise that God is fitting together a good many more things than are any of our business. We need never see what good it did or how a given trouble accomplishes anything. It is peace to leave it all with Him, asking only that He do with me anything He wants, anywhere, anytime, that God may be glorified."
~ Elizabeth Elliot
