I'm not a military person, so what they say if they weigh in goes.

But looking at Bubba News summary- the short form is the initial wave dealt with air defenses, and some other stuff seems to be happening too. Israeli sources like Amir are disappointed, they wanted to get the nuclear and oil facilities as well but Bubba is reporting that Israeli military are saying this is just the beginning. The operation will continue over some time.

Why would it need to last for months, why is it necessary to be that long?

That worries me too. Israel can't afford to go in half measures or they allow Iran to fight again another day - more cost to all.

I don't know why they would estimate it that way. It could be less but a lot determines on whether Iran gets any assistance from it's allies I imagine.
