US 'giving up' on Lebanon

Almost Heaven

Well-known
Amid US efforts to persuade Hezbollah to lay down its arms, Sky News Arabia reported that American diplomatic sources acknowledged the international initiative had reached an impasse. Officials in Washington warned that Lebanon risks remaining "paralyzed and externally dependent" due to Hezbollah's dominant position.

According to the report, the US had pushed for the creation of economic and political conditions that might encourage Hezbollah to voluntarily and fundamentally address the weapons issue. The proposal reportedly included financial commitments totaling billions of dollars from Gulf states, along with the immediate launch of negotiations with Israel "inspired by the Abraham Accords."

However, key figures in Beirut rejected the offer and preferred to preserve the current political and security reality. As a result, the sources predicted that international engagement with Beirut would revert to "traditional diplomatic rhythms," reducing talks to technical exchanges rather than the basis for meaningful change.

A senior US official stated, "Unfortunately, they prefer the status quo, which means Lebanon will remain a failed state," adding that "the moment of potential change, created by President Donald Trump through his energy and vision, has now passed."

I can't remember which teacher said it but pretty much diplomacy as the west understands it will never work in the middle east.

Their whole psyche and way of life in general is just wired differently

I just watched a video where an African lady explained that most African countries have no concept of time in the future. Time just happens and the best has happened in the past. As a result, there is no motivation to plan for the future. The word for maintenance doesn’t exist in their vocabulary nor as a concept in most African cultures which is why their countries have ecosystems that are in shambles and leftover British Empire structures in disrepair.

Those cultures are clearly not compatible with Western cultures and should not be imported over to them.

I just watched that young woman's video. She definitely seems to be quoting Kenyan philosopher John Mbiti correctly. But I believe the mistake she makes is to generalize his observations to all of Africa. The Internet is alive with reactions from other Africans to her video. Typical is a person from Ghana who says Mbiti's statements are absolutely incorrect because Ghanaians "have so many proverbs and wise sayings that speak about the future. We didn't learn such concepts from the Western world. His analysis is not applicable here." Another points out that Mbiti can only speak for the Swahili people of East Africa. Based on the discussions going on this has certainly raised an interesting topic!
