Trump threatens sanctions against countries purchasing Iranian oil, petrochemicals

US President Donald Trump said all purchases of Iranian oil or petrochemical products must stop and any country or person buying any from the country would be immediately subject to secondary sanctions.

“ALERT: All purchases of Iranian oil, or petrochemical products, must stop, NOW!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“Any country or person who buys ANY AMOUNT of OIL or PETROCHEMICALS from Iran will be subject to, immediately, secondary sanctions,” he continued. “They will not be allowed to do business with the United States of America in any way, shape, or form.”

Trump’s comments follow the postponement of the latest US talks with Iran over its nuclear program, which had been due to take place in Rome on Saturday. A senior Iranian official told Reuters a new date will be set “depending on the US approach.”

Trump’s administration has targeted Tehran with a series of sanctions on entities including a China-based crude oil storage terminal and an independent refiner it has accused of being involved in illicit trade in oil and petrochemicals.

There’s Something going on with the US - Iran nuclear talks and it’s NOT LOOKING GOOD.

I find it a bit confusing to see the Iranian FM talk about continuing the negotiations and the ENDING of sanctions, when Trump just ordered ALL the countries in the world to stop buying Iranian Oil

Iranian FM said: “On Iran's part, there is no change in our determination to secure a NEGOTIATED SOLUTION.

In fact, we are MORE DETERMINED THAN EVER to achieve a just and balanced deal: guaranteeing an END to sanctions, and creating confidence that Iran's nuclear program WILL FOREVER REMAIN PEACEFUL while ensuring that Iranian (nuclear) rights are fully respected.”

This is Very strange messaging from Iran right after Trump goes hard on Iran.

The Iranian FM is just mouthing the words he believes the world wants to hear. BUT Somehow, I get the feeling that Tehran might be digging in their heels.

IRAN IS ONLY BUYING TIME…

Praying that the talks cease and Iran gets dealt with for all our sakes, but especially Israel. The Mullahs continue to chant death to America, death to Israel- and continue to work at ways to make that a reality. I see no reason to allow them more time on top of the decades the West has granted them.

The definition of stupid is to keep doing the same thing that didn't work the last few hundred times. We're way past the negotiating table and everyone knows it.

I can envision that during the time these talks are occurring, Iran might be moving and hiding their nuclear bomb making material so that after an attack that destroys their known Nuclear facilities Iran will be able to reconstitute and quickly build launchable nuclear warheads.

Well that's the understatement of the year!

It doesn't look like previous sanctions have halted or even slowed down anything. Why bother with more. Russia and Iran both seem to be doing just fine and they are under sanctions.

Sanctioning countries makes them want to be free of the country doing the sanctioning. I think the USA as a world leader is diminishing and all the sanctions the US keeps imposing on countries is expediting that fall from world leadership. Sanctions in most cases are one country trying to compel another country or countries to do what it wants outside of a normal legal system. There's no legal requirement to toe the line and obey the sanction's terms but some countries choose to do it to stay in the good graces of the country doing the sanctioning...

Sanctioning seems about as effective as a subgroup of people boycotting a business for whatever reason... not at all effective in most cases.

100% agree.

100%! Sanctions have the appearance of action without actually doing anything. I'm trying to think of when sanctions have actually had a serious effect on a nation. Perhaps they have at some point on a tiny, economically weak nation. But I can't think of one off the top of my head.
