Trump admin considering deploying troops to Iranian shores along Strait of Hormuz, Kharg Island: report

President Trump is reportedly weighing the deployment of thousands of additional US troops to the Middle East that could potentially be used on the ground in Iran.

The Trump administration has discussed using ground forces on Iranian shores to secure the Strait of Hormuz and Kharg Island, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

The Pentagon is believed to have already authorized the deployment of additional Marines and warships to the Middle East as Iran continues to attack oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz, the Wall Street Journal reported last week.

An interesting take from Tania Koenig:

This war has now entered a phase that is far more dangerous than anything we have seen so far, and it is no longer possible to describe it as a contained military confrontation between Iran, Israel, and the United States. What unfolded today is not simply escalation; it is a structural shift that is pulling the entire regional and global system into the center of the conflict.

US speeds up deployment of thousands more Marines, sailors to Middle East

The Pentagon is speeding up the deployment of thousands of additional Marines and sailors to the Middle East amid speculation that the Trump administration could send troops into Iranian territory.

The 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), made up of at least 2,200 Marines, set off from San Diego aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer on Wednesday, sooner than expected, according to multiple reports.

Reuters reported that the troops departed the U.S. about three weeks ahead of schedule.
