They Called 911 for Help—But the State Took Their Children Instead

Imperfect but forgiven

In April 2024, Kaliyah Chism and her husband, Jaicobi Freeman, called an ambulance to take their two-month-old son, Kylen, to the hospital after he experienced an injury. By the next day, the state had seized all of their children. Now, the mother and father are fighting the state of Georgia not only for their own freedom but also for the freedom of their children.

The family’s ordeal began during a routine diaper change. “My husband explained to me that he was changing the diaper, and Kylen’s leg got caught in the onesie. He tried to get it out, and he heard a pop,” Chism told Townhall.

After arriving at the hospital, Kylen was moved to the Children’s Hospital of Atlanta (CHOA). The staff informed the parents that the child had several fractures in his ribs, lower extremities, and his left leg.

Kaliyah and Jaicobi, both 23, were shocked, as they had “only [been] aware of the leg fracture.”

We only know what the article is telling us, though I suspect the parents are innocent. Child Protective Services has too much power in some areas of the country. For innocent parents, this is a horrifying scenario.

There can be medical factors that aren't considered.

There is a fragile bone disease called Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Kids with this show up with multiple fractures, sometimes occurring spontaneously without any warning or activity. Not every dr picks up on it until they show up in emerg. Multiple fractures are always a big sign of abuse.

There are other disorders that can be mistaken for abuse rather easily- Ehler Danlos is one where joints are easily disconnected- usually hips, elbows and shoulders. But disconnected joints are often on the admission notes of abused kids.

Our son had an unusual reaction to one of his first vaccines- he bled into his tissues forming huge welts. Thankfully I got him into the emerg dept in time. At first the dr wouldn't even see him because Andrew was laughing at me and barked "Sick babies don't laugh" which was incredibly stupid. I took him home, contacted our GP at home and she immediately arranged for another try at the hospital.

This time the welts were forming rapidly, and the same dr told me "if I hadn't seen these happening I'd have had you up for child abuse". He was in the hospital for a week. They didn't connect it to the vaccine, but called it an allergic reaction to a virus. What virus? he was never sick. They looked into Von Willebrand disease which can also cause it and ruled it out for no particularly good reason. I still suspect that the vaccine triggered it and his easy bruising and spontaneous gushing nose bleeds mean he DOES have Von Willebrand syndrome.

So just off the top, 3 that should be quickly looked at before accusing parents.

However busy emerg depts follow the rule of better safe than sorry, and assume the worst so that they don't send a kid back into harms way. Better to harm the parents than cause more risk to a vulnerable child.

That’s my nightmare. We pay for Heritage Defense to have a Christian parenting advocacy group to call if CPS ever gets involved.
That is a very good plan to have ahead of time!

CPS has been a problem in the States from back when I began homeschooling in the 90s. A lot of the issues were from neighbours or school districts falsely claiming child abuse for home school families, and that was a big problem here in Canada too.
