The Five Worldwide Blackouts of the End Time Period

Tall Timbers

Imperfect but forgiven

It seems that these days we're seeing more extreme weather events around the world. More earthquakes, many more. Is God trying to get mankind's attention? I think so. Will natural catastrophes continue to grow in frequency as we near the end of this era? I think so. The Bible describes 5 complete blackouts of all light during the end time period. Following is commentary with supporting Scripture for those events.

The Five End Times Blackouts

From Footsteps of the Messiah, by Arnold Fruchtenbaum

Blackout I Before Tribulation

Pg 129-130: The Scriptures predict five blackouts that will occur during the end time period, including the last days of the church age and the tribulation. When the Bible speaks of a blackout, it means that the light of the sun, moon, and stars is suddenly blocked so that the earth is in total darkness.

The blackouts in the end times will be similar to what happened during the ninth plague in Egypt, described in Exodus 10:21-23:

21 And Jehovah said unto Moses, Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt. 22 And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days; 23 they saw not one another, neither rose any one from his place for three days: but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.

Another example of such a blackout is Matthew 27:45: Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. During the last three hours of Yeshua’s sacrificial death on the cross, darkness struck the land.

The first of the five end-time blackouts is prophesied by Joel 2:31 to occur before the tribulation: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of Jehovah comes. Again, the term “the day of Jehovah” is used as a name for the tribulation. Joel clearly puts the first blackout before the tribulation, saying that it will strike the whole world.

Blackout 2 At the End of Seal Judgments

Pg 218: Each series of judgments ends with convulsions of nature, and the sixth seal concludes the first series of judgments with such convulsions. The convulsions begin with an earthquake (v. 12a), followed by a blackout of the sun and moon and a meteor shower (vv. 12b-14). As has been stated in Chapter 5, the Bible speaks of five blackouts during the end times, and this is the second blackout. Anarchy ensues as men begin to flee from the wrath of God rather than turn to Him in faith (vv. 15-17). This passage shows that with the fifth seal, even unbelievers recognize that they are experiencing the wrath of God. They may have been able to explain away the previous judgments as natural catastrophes, but with the nature of the sixth seal, that will no longer be possible. It should be noted that the passage does not say that the wrath of God begins only with the sixth seal, but that only with the sixth seal do unbelievers recognize that it is the wrath of God.

Blackout 3 5th Trumpet Judgment

Pg 226: When the abyss is opened by the fallen angel, the third blackout occurs (v. 2), and for the third time all light from the sun will temporarily cease reaching to the earth. But it is not the blackout that makes the fifth trumpet judgment the first woe judgment. Out of the abyss, a great number of demons are released for the first of two demonic invasions (v. 3). These demons are commissioned to carry out the fifth trumpet judgment (vv. 4-5). They are commanded to refrain from destroying any vegetation and told to torment only those who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. So, the 144,000 Jews (and probably all believers at the time) are excluded from any harm in this first demonic invasion (7:3-4). Furthermore, the demons are commanded to kill no one, but only to torment men for five months, or 150 days. Generally, John does not reveal the duration of time for each of the judgments, but in this case, the timing is given. There will be a limit as to how much destruction these demons will be allowed to render. Unsaved mankind will be open to torment, but not death.

Blackout 4 5th Bowl Judgment

Pg 276: Among the various results of the fifth trumpet judgment was the third blackout. The fifth bowl judgment will result in the fourth blackout of the end times. The entire kingdom of the beast will be darkened. At this stage, the kingdom will include the whole world with the exception of the three Transjordanian nations where light will still exist. This will be a thick darkness that can be felt. Along with the darkness comes a gnawing pain that will cause mankind to blaspheme all the more. The circumstances are not unlike what befell Egypt in Exodus 10:21-23. The sixth (Rev. 16:12-16) and seventh (Rev. 16:17-21) bowl judgments are both concerned with the Campaign of Armageddon, which will be discussed in Chapter 14 of this study.

Blackout 5 7th Bowl Judgment

With the seventh bowl, a voice cries out, “It is done,” because this judgment brings the tribulation to an end (v. 17). The declaration is followed by convulsions of nature, including the greatest earthquake ever to occur in the history of the earth (v. 18). This will cause the city of Jerusalem to split into three divisions, while the city of Babylon will suffer the full wrath of God (v. 19). Many geographical changes will take place (v. 20), and hail weighing 120 pounds will fall (v. 21).

The earthquake that will shake Jerusalem is further described in Zechariah 14:4b-5:

4b And the mount of Olives shall be cleft in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. 5 And ye shall flee by the valley of my mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azel; yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah; and Jehovah my God shall come, and all the holy ones with you.

Not only will Jerusalem be split into three divisions, but the Mount of Olives will be split into two parts, creating a valley running east and west. This newly-formed valley will provide a way of escape for the Jewish inhabitants of Jerusalem from the earthquake that will destroy the city. Their rescue follows the deliverance of the other Jews in Bozrah.

Another cataclysmic event that will take place at this time is the fifth worldwide blackout, described in Matthew 24:29: But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.

The earthquake and the blackout of this time are also described in Joel 3:14-17:

14 Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! for the day of Jehovah is near in the valley of decision. 15 The sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining. 16 And Jehovah will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but Jehovah will be a refuge unto his people, and a stronghold to the children of Israel. 17 So shall ye know that I am Jehovah your God, dwelling in Zion my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.

With the multitudes defeated in the closing of the day of Jehovah in the Valley of Jehoshaphat (v. 14), a blackout will occur (v. 15) as well as a great earthquake (v. 16a). But a refuge will be provided for the Jews (vv. 16b-17) by means of the valley cutting through the Mount of Olives spoken of by Zechariah. The cataclysmic events will end the great tribulation and the Campaign of Armageddon.

I didn't think about a total darkness during the 5th trumpet judgement. Those horse headed locust scorpion things coming out of the bottomless pit are going to be absolutely terrible, not being able to see them and not be able to avoid them due to the darkness makes them even more horrible. The whole 7 years are going to be horrible.

prophesied by Joel 2:31 to occur before the tribulation: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of Jehovah comes. Again, the term “the day of Jehovah” is used as a name for the tribulation.
The March blood moon occurs on Purim, the festival that celebrates the Jews’ deliverance from annihilation in ancient Persia/Iran.
I believe, March’s blood moon is biblically significant because: It is the last total lunar eclipse for nearly three years.

This brother made a fitting short video about it:

His information comes from the text that can be read here:

"In 2026, these events cluster in a way that some interpret through a prophetic lens: Feb 17, 2026 — Solar (sun darkened), Mar 3, 2026 — Total lunar eclipse (moon blood), Purim — March 2-3 on the Hebrew calendar in 2026 Live Science. Purim is itself a story of reversal and deliverance from a death decree (Isaiah’s themes of hiding & preservation echo in Esther’s fast) — so seeing these sky signs near it invites reflection on how celestial language and biblical imagery intersect. Purim has now lined up with a FULL blood moon three years in a row — 2024, 2025, and 2026. That’s striking because blood moons only happen during total lunar eclipses, which are already uncommon, and they must occur exactly on a full moon. For them to land on the same biblical feast repeatedly is rarer still, since feast dates shift on the Hebrew lunar calendar while eclipses follow precise celestial mechanics. Most years have zero blood moons. Some have one. A tight three-year consecutive alignment on Purim is unusual and naturally draws attention because it compresses rare astronomical events into a very specific, meaningful calendar window. Whether viewed astronomically or symbolically, it’s not something that happens casually or often."

We know that the year is counted from Nisan to Nisan according to Scripture. That means that in 2025, the year began on Nisan and will end on Nisan 2026. We know that we will be raptured starting in Revelation 4:1. In Revelation 5, the Lamb appears „as it had been slain“. If this is a picture of the Passover — the Lamb „as it had been slain“— could it be that we will be raptured shortly before a Passover?

I don't agree with the blood moon nonsense.

The occurance is to happen once and that is durimg the tribulation.

About a week ago, I sent the above-mentioned link to an elderly brother who has been studying the prophetic scriptures for about 50 years. This was his response: „I feel like an amateur Watchman after studying this man's post for several hours.

Not only did he take the effort to read through the link before giving his opinion—and take his counterpart seriously—but, to my great delight, he is able to consume strong meat.

How wonderful it is to see brothers and sisters eagerly awaiting the Lord's coming, sharing their thoughts, encouraging, and comforting one another. The other letters the brothers publish each month are also well worth reading!

Respectfully, it is one thing to eagerly await the Lord's coming, share our thoughts, encourage, and comfort one another. But it's quite another to set a date. Many apparently sound Bible teachers have fallen into that trap in the past and have brought ridicule on the promise of Christ's return and the hope of the Rapture Much harm has been done to the cause of the Gospel by date-setters in the past. Hopes are raised, only to be dashed when the "certain" date comes and goes. It makes Christianity a laughing stock ... and it is quite unnecessary. And what is doubly sad is that many of these date setters are long time Bible experts who have very logical reasons (in the view of many) for their belief. Yet, they were wrong and, in the process, led many others into error. This is why we do not allow date setting here and we remove links to date setters.

We are not called to name the date of the Rapture, but to be prepared for it at all times and to be faithfully doing the work Jesus gave us to do. Surely it is more than sufficient for us to simply say the return of Christ for His Church is imminent; so live prepared because it is very, very close.

The linked letter isn't about "date-setting," but rather about the possible placement of the Rapture within the season preceding the Tribulation. The older brother simply chose the title of his letter to express his anticipation of a possible Rapture. This is quite common among mature Christians, at least in the forums I follow. Things become dark in Christianity when one is no longer allowed to consider possible timeframes for the Rapture.

Respectfully, he gave a very specific 48-72 hour timeframe for the Rapture this spring. Just as specific as the 48 hour timeframe other Bible scholars gave for the Rapture last fall.

It's one thing to give reasons for why the Rapture could be at one specific time of the year or another. I've done that. In fact, I believe that the Rapture will quite likely occur on a feast of trumpets in some upcoming year and I have given the biblical reasons why I believe that. But it's another thing to say a specific date and a specific year. That latter is date setting. We cannot allow that. It's not scriptural.

When one looks at these brothers' website, one realizes that these are letters. And I personally share their anticipation. Where will we end up if we are no longer allowed to express this anticipation and mention a possible time frame? The Lord Jesus would certainly not silence us, nor would He call it “nonsense” if we observe the signs of the faithful witness. But if we are not allowed to say this here, I will simply withdraw, because such human rules are not biblical.

Respectfully, it is date setting that is not biblical, my sister. The brother did not simply give a possible time frame; he gave a definite time (Purim) this spring.

Even though I think Purim is incorrect, I think it is worth examining as a possibility. But we need to be careful about specifying a year, which unfortunately he did.

The Lord has appointed times. Some associate the Rapture with the autumn festivals, others with Pentecost, and this brother—and many others—with Purim. We observe this timeframe. And the Lord Jesus is present wherever two or three gather. I know of no scripture in the Bible that forbids this.

You are free to simply delete my posts, as it has already been expressed and liked above that they are considered "nonsense." Personally, I find it hurtful and humiliating when a child of God expresses their anticipation and their post is equated with "nonsense."

Your post was not equated with nonsense. One member (and only one member) expressed their view that it was nonsense to consider the significance of blood moons outside of the Tribulation period. That is a generalization he made. Some agree. Some disagree. This board is wide open to opinions. However I am trying to get across the point that it is one thing to consider a time frame as possible and another to consider it as probable. His language left little doubt that he believes this Purim is the date of the Rapture. And that is where he crossed the line from scholarly discussion to actual date setting. Had he simply made the case for Purim and left it there, I might disagree; but I wouldn't quibble. And I certainly would not have removed the link to his site

Anyway, you may disagree and we accept that. In a handful of weeks we will know whether he was correct or not. If he was, then he will look like a great scholar and I will look foolish as we all enter Heaven. If he wasn't, then at least this board will not have given support to what will have proven to be error.
