Port strike looming: What to know and expect

A strike involving port workers along the East Coast is looming this week as the time ticks by for a labor deal to be reached.

If a deal isn’t reached by the end of the day Monday, thousands of dockworkers could begin striking Tuesday, Oct. 1, potentially putting a massive economic strain on retailers before the peak holiday shopping season.

Here is what to know about the labor dispute and effects of the potential strike:

Unionized dockworkers in the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), which represents 45,000 members at East Coast and Gulf Coast ports, may go on strike beginning Tuesday, Oct. 1 if an agreement isn't reached by the end of Monday.

What's really sick about all this is that it was starting by a couple of so-called influencers on social media. And like a bunch of lemmings people went nuts. Andrea and I were in Sam's club couple of days ago to buy our monthly supply of toilet paper and other goods and we couldn't find it. What there was was in people's carts all lined up to check out. I had to go online to figure out why there was such a run on toilet paper. There's an East Coast shipping strike so people panic because an influencer said you better stock up on toilet paper. Sometimes I wonder if there's any hope for people in this country. And what scary is all of these people have the right to vote! It explains why Kamala Harris is still running neck and neck with Donald Trump in the polls!
So stupid. 🙄
I hope you are able to find your actually-needed TP somewhere.

Strike was settled last night. Just waiting for the official vote. Workers received 62% wage increase over 6 years.

A historic United States port strike has been suspended and a tentative agreement was reached "on wages," according to the International Longshoremen’s Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance.

"Effective immediately, all current job actions will cease and all work covered by the Master Contract will resume," the ILA and USMX said in a joint statement Thursday evening.

The tentative agreement would increase workers’ wages by 62% over the life of the 6-year contract, sources familiar confirm to ABC News.

This represents a significant increase from the shipping industry group’s offer of a 50% wage increase earlier this week. The union had been pushing for a 77% pay hike over six years.

The tentative agreement would bring the hourly wage for a top dockworker to $63 per hour at the end of the new contract, up from $39 per hour under the expired contract.

The Maritime Alliance increased its offer amid public pressure from the Biden administration to put forward a contract offering higher wages.

The tentative agreement does not resolve differences between the union and shipping companies over the use of automated machinery, sources said. That will be a key focus of negotiations between both sides from now until January 15.

Thanking God for that- all jokes aside, this was a bad situation with a lot of ripple effects across the economy of the US and probably else where.

We went to Aldi today and they had no baggies in the fruit and vegetable section. We had to find a box to put our apples in. Come to find out the cashier said those baggies come from overseas and were held up at the port. And she said they had no plastic gloves for the employees either. (For drippy meat packages, etc.) Makes me wonder what other inconveniences in life we may have had if this thing kept going. Not a big deal but different for sure.

But it was just suspended. Until after the election.
