Meanwhile, US oil production surpasses Saudi, Russia combined; natural gas output crosses total of Russia, China and Iran

Well-known

One of the key arguments whenever the US becomes involved in a Middle East conflict is that “it’s about the oil”. However, over the past decade, the US has quietly shifted from being an importer to one of the world’s largest producers of oil and natural gas. As the country becomes embroiled in yet another Middle East conflict, this time with Iran, the latest production data is striking

Except that US producers want to sell our oil elsewhere because they can make huge profits overseas. It's not being kept here to lower our costs. So, if the price of gas is high elsewhere in the world, it is kept equally high here.

Additionally, a lot of our refineries aren't set up to process our sweet crude, so we import crude from elsewhere and sell our own. Hopefully any new refineries that get built are built to handle our own oil.
