Kirk Cameron no longer believes in eternal punishment

In a recent episode of his show, Kirk Cameron publicly announced a change in his long-held views on Hell. Previously accepting the view of eternal conscious torment for the wicked, he now rejects it — calling such a fate “cruel and unusual punishment.”

Cameron argues that the Bible, especially in its Old Testament writing, does not depict the souls of the wicked as immortal. Instead, the only souls promised eternal life — immortality — are those granted to believers.

Cameron’s shift reflects this framework: Hell, in his new view, is not an eternal “pain chamber,” but the final end for those outside redemption.

As expected, Cameron’s announcement has sparked intense debate. Some readers of the original article — and commenters on related forums — have pushed back, pointing to verses such as Matthew 25:46 (which contrasts “eternal punishment” with “eternal life”) as evidence for traditional eternal-torment doctrine. One commenter wrote,

“Jesus spoke those words. Eternal and eternal. Seems pretty cut and dried to me.”

Actor Kirk Cameron gives up on The Rapture 24 years after starring in End Times film

Christian actor Kirk Cameron speculated that the End Times might not happen in the near future as many of his religious contemporaries believe.

Despite starring in the 2000 "Left Behind" film about The Rapture, Cameron suggested to right-wing podcast host Steve Bannon that he had given up on Jesus coming back anytime soon.

****Kirk Cameron interview with Forbes.
Seems he has also adopted Dominionism****

I noticed that Kirk Cameron, who described himself as ‘the Left Behind guy’, seemed to be sending out signals of cultural optimism. The famous dictum from a radio preacher that ‘you don’t polish the brass on a sinking ship’ didn’t seem to jibe with Cameron’s message of hope as presented in his Revive Us theatrical events. So in a recent interview I asked him if he had left behind Left Behind.

His answer: “I don’t see anything in the Scriptures saying that defeat was inevitable.” Wow. That’s big. In my spiritual experience, when you join up, you get your Four Spiritual Laws, your ‘Sinners Prayer’ and then your prophecy secret decoder ring. And in no version of that prophecy story is defeat for the Church anything but inevitable: Anti-Christ, 666, computer chips in the hand (or the forehead for amputees), global government, mushroom clouds over Israel, the end. If all that is inevitable then what would be the point of trying to ‘disciple the nations’? The nations are doomed to be the disciples of a blood-thirsty global tyrant. As Kirk put it, this version of the story gives Christians pretty much one job, “Get my kids and neighbors into the life boat and rescue them from the sinking ship.”

In contrast to this truncated version of the Gospel, Cameron maintains that it is the job of the Church, “…to push back darkness and stop corruption and disciple nations with the power that raised Him from the dead in a kingdom which wins; it doesn’t lose. Greater is He who is within us than he that is in the world.” In other words, go ahead and polish the brass. Swab the decks, scrape the hull, stoke the coal, grab the wheel and full-steam ahead. This ship is going forward, not down.

This is a 2017 article so it appears he has been on the slippery slope for some time?

I didn't realize who he was. So he's an actor not a preacher! I thought in the threads we've discussed him that he was some preacher who'd gone over to the NAR and Dominionism.

Hmmm!

Not sure if that means fewer will listen to his theological fiasco or more will. Probably more.

Well hopefully his conscience and the Holy Spirit will be working on him, but I wish people wouldn't look up to actors of all people. They get paid to lie! With few exceptions their moral compass is off and the lines between truth and lies is blurred.

Even ones that act in Christian movies like this one did. I suppose that is why he's a big name in Christian circles?

Poor guy!

I never even read the Left Behind novels till a few years ago when Amazon had a kindle bundle sale on them. George and I enjoyed them. I watched one or two Left Behind movies on TV after that. Can't say they were that good.

Does he honestly think those movies or the books are why Christians believe in the Rapture? Wow!

The problem with this is that his popularity and having a platform, as well as guesting in other known platforms, imposes an influence on those who listen to him, and from there the word of mouth spreads the false doctrine that hinders the unsaved from coming to the accurate knowledge of scripture, and misleading theology can also taint the gospel of salvation causing people to believe in a false Jesus who taught on the very things Kirk has turned away from, a Jesus they have conformed to their own desires.
It doesnt take a preacher to spread unsound doctrine that leads people to the wide road of destruction, Eternal torment that Kirk doesnt believe in anymore.
He needs to repent and stop turning to false doctrine and spreading those lies, because he is leading people down the wrong path and will be held accountable for every lost soul he has influenced

From what I gather and from the last articles I posted above about Kirk's dominionism stance
Im not convinced he ever had the truth.
His having an acting role on the Left Behind series doesnt mean he was a believer.
He obviously has had a religious background but his thinking from his 2017 interview with Forbes is plainly NAR beliefs, to establish the kingdom for Jesus to return.
So his change of mind on what hell is shouldn't be surprising as well as his not believing in a Pre Millennial view with a Pre Tribulation Rapture just falls in line with his long views on Kingdom Now that is held by the NAR.
I still say he needs prayer and anyone who has been misled needs prayer to seek the true Jesus and receive the truth that will set them free and be saved 🙏

He has done a lot of work with street preacher Ray Comfort. I think that probably gave Kirk more of a voice in Christian circles.

I like his Iggy and Mr. Kirk show for kids that my kids watch and his documentary on Homeschooling he came out with several years ago. Other than that, I don’t know much more about him and his views apart from what I hear now.

Thankfully nothing suspicious comes out in the kid show nor the documentary.

Yes, and in 2017 when he denied the rapture I posted an article on RF about both of them now denying the rapture. Daniel Comfort (If I recall his name?) signed up and gave us good feedback. I thought about it all and honestly, it’s not a salvation issue to me so I stopped criticizing those who don’t understand the rapture.

Have you had time to hear his first installment from this past Sunday?
No. I'm still in my shutdown mode from media including YT. I occasionally glance at the headlines from 2 news feeds that come up on my iPhone when I start it up in the morning. And I see stuff in here. I am dealing with a bad spike in the grief that has been quite difficult since October. It just makes it very hard to concentrate. It'll pass.

What particularly did you notice from that sermon that stood out to you?

People need to read and study The :bible: for themselves the Holy Spirit that indwells us is our teacher and comforter. If what people say doesn't line up with The :bible:we know they are wrong. We are told to follow Jesus not people.

First thing I noticed is that I have not been taking this stuff seriously enough.
  • He cites the history of annihilationism (was it the third century?)
  • We learn about Cameron disavowing the rapture doctrine about 10-yrs ago
  • There’s discussion about people following popular celebrities, podcasters, etc. who are not biblical in their worldview :sheepaid:
  • He likes how big ministries jumped on Cameron, like Answers in Genesis and Ray Comfort, Cameron backed down but declared that popular false trope “I only want to discuss it.” :bored:
  • He did an excellent exposition about why we do not allow heretics in our midst to ‘discuss’ things
  • The biggest understanding that I’m still chewing on is how to better discern a false teacher from someone who holds a few false beliefs. That has puzzled me since I started going to church. I got saved in 2009 and by 2010 decided that maybe I wanted to go to church? There’s a half dozen within walking distance so I started there. I was so naive— I couldn’t grasp that denominations mattered, until I visited the Methodist church…
There’s much more and I know that your keen ears will pick up insightful nuggets to share.
One thing that made me feel better :blessed:is that Ray Comfort stood up to Cameron. He may not believe in the rapture and he is too heavy on Lordship salvation, but as his son Daniel conveyed years ago on RF, those two are brothers in Christ.

Oh yeah, minor point, but I finally kinda understand Open Theism a little better

Thank you, exactly what I was hoping you'd do, boil it down for me in easy to grasp bullet points. I've paid attn to discernment stuff since I was ex'ed out of that bad church in the late 90s.

For what it's worth, I STILL find discernment a challenge with those who are partly right, and partly wrong. It's that deceptive mixture that makes it hard to decide. Because nobody is infallible, we all wobble with a lesser interpretation of some areas that we aren't versed in yet. Grace for that, but not for wilful departure from sound doctrine. And this was.

I'm glad that some are standing up to this error, and yes you are right - the "I only want to discuss it" is the fast fix for the heretics and false teachers. They worm their way in thru that false innocence.

I just finished watching Andy Woods, and he explained that hell is forever you just don't cease to exist. He gives lots of scriptures to back it up. He made it clear. Sometimes people don't want to face the real truth it makes them feel better to think it can't be that bad. The :bible: says those who do not accept Jesus as forgiveness for their sins will be at the Great White Throne Judgment, and they will be thrown into the lake of fire. www.gotquestions.org/annihilationism.html

l thought Kirk Cameron and Ray Comfort were big John MacArthur LS accolades? So now Kirk is an annihilationist?
It seems so. Unlike Ray Comfort, he’s possibly on a slippery slope. It’s a kinda familiar pattern. First he changed his views from pre-trib to preterist, next he sided with replacement theology, now this seeker friendly view of hell.

I think Rob Bell & Andy Stanley had similar departures from orthodox Christianity.

It seems like a lot of people are into false teaching. God isn't through with Israel or replaced them with the church. God is not willing that any should perish, but come to repentance that includes the Jewish people. Deception :diablo: is sure creeping into the church. hopeforourtimes.com/internal/israels-place-in-gods-eternal-plan-preview/
