How solid is R.C. Sproul?

All very good points. Thank you both. I've written and preached often over of the years on Calvinism, its error is and the harm it does. Many years ago when he was still alive and active, Sproul used to be on our local Christian radio at a time when I was driving. As he was talking I'd be talking back to the radio pointing out what scripture says ... and at time's yelling at the radio! I certainly wouldn't recommend him. But that said, Ron is a mature Christian and a sound Bible teacher. I think for such a person there is material that Sproul (and other famous Calvinists such as D A. Carson, Jonathan Edwards, Charles Spurgeon, Andrew Murray, Martin Luther, and John Bunyan, to name only a few out of very many) gleaned from Scripture, that --when used judiciously-- could be useful in preparing lessons.

To remove the great expositors and theologians of history from our studies because they espoused Calvinism to one degree or another would be a mistake in my opinion. However I should have given my comments to Ron in a private message. It was not appropriate for me to post my comments publicly on a board where so many people, including visitors, read and might be led to believe that Calvinism is good doctrine. I apologize for that and regret posting publicly. I would delete my initial reply except that it has provoked some good and useful responses.
I appreciate what you wrote! My father believes in Calvinism, but he does love the Lord and I know I will see him in heaven.

Didn’t realize Sproul believed in replacement theology….. just learned that now in this thread

Andy has a good bone to pick with (Neo?) Calvinism. I have heard him go off on some pretty serious and convicting rants about it deep within some of his series. Afterword he's like "I don't know where that came from but I guess the Lord wanted me to say it" lol

Although I write a lengthy response to Calvinism last night , I just saw this thread and the mentioning of Andy Woods who is doing a series currently in Calvinism ( as was mentioned ) but I’m going to post his latest video link on perseverance of the saints.

It will might be helpful and answer quite a few questions and misconceptions… but it’d be worthwhile to also check out the previous sermons he’s already done because this one video is only a small portion of valuable information on this subject

Did any of you see Chadd from 3 of 7 project talking with Joe Rogan recently? He evangelized Joe from a pretty much, I thought, Calvinistic stance. He's quite sincere, but I believe mistaken in some aspects, like man's ability to choose. I'm still learning, and curious to anyone's thoughts if you saw it or care to search it up on YT.

Yes he’s started out with the ‘T’ of tulip, but my guess is that’s from the pastor who first helped him. The reason I say that is because he’s truly boasting in Christ. He’s not the type of Calvinist who has their nose up in the air with a ‘neener neener, I’m chosen and you’re not’. He’s very humbled and honest about his salvation testimony.

I listen to a lot of Leighton Flowers who always calls all Calvinists brothers in Christ. I like that pretty much.

But in my case I give tons of grace to those roped into Calvinism as baby Christians—yet tend to remain very suspicious of those who choose the TULIP though they were taught the evangelical dispositional framework.

Amen.

Makes me think of 1 Corinthians 13, in the midst of the chapter about love being the greatest, Paul shares:

Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity.
Vs. 12

It grieves my heart to think there are those saved who do not have that assurance of their salvation (was my personal anguish growing up, for different reasons).

What a tool of our enemy to neutralize the Christian's impact by keeping them constantly afraid, insecure and in essence in a works based, legalistic mindset (although God is supremely greater and can move despite this).

I met a poor woman, before knowing about this teaching, who obviously loved the Lord and was saved. Her comments had greatly puzzled me in that she communicated that in essence she was a lost cause but she held out hope for her children.

It was a rushed comment and I wasn't able to enquire further, but was so troubled, she stayed in my prayers. I now suspect she had been oppressed by that rotten flower of a teaching.

I can't help but to see similarities to Islam, in that the adherents are incredibly insecure about their standing with who they believe God is.

If a saved person via placed faith in Jesus, struggling with calvinism can cling to a passage for assurance, this would be a good one:

For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

2 Timothy 1:7

Is anyone who's believed in Jesus feeling fear in regards to your salvation? Then perhaps this is not of God, for He given us His spirit of His power, His love and by His power (not ours) for self-discipline.

Praise God!!!! It's all His complete work on our behalf, to the uttermost....all of it. :)

Therefore a believer can be completely assured they now possess eternal life:

The Father loves his Son and has put everything into his hands. And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life....

John 3:35-36

I see many Calvinists as confused Christians. It's sad to see. One of my good friends is trapped in that. We have agreed to disagree at this point and just continue loving one another.
