Planned Parenthood Sues Trump Admin over Defunding in ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’​

Abortion giant Planned Parenthood filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration on Monday over a provision in the “Big, Beautiful Bill” stripping the organization of taxpayer dollars through Medicaid for one year.

The organization filed the lawsuit in Boston federal court, arguing that the provision is unconstitutional and will block its nearly 600 centers from receiving Medicaid reimbursements, Reuters reported.

“The true design of the Defund Provision is simply to express disapproval of, attack, and punish Planned Parenthood, which plays a particularly prominent role in the public debate over abortion,” Planned Parenthood said.

Federal Judge Blocks Provision of ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ Defunding Planned Parenthood​

A federal judge on Monday temporarily halted a provision in President Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” blocking taxpayer dollars from going to Planned Parenthood through Medicaid.

U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani, who was appointed by President Barack Obama, swiftly issued a Temporary Restraining Order on the same day Planned Parenthood filed its lawsuit, blocking the provision for 14 days and ordering the Department of Health and Human Services (DHS) to “take all steps necessary to ensure that Medicaid funding continues to be disbursed” to Planned Parenthood.

Planned Parenthood alleges in its lawsuit that Congress targeted Planned Parenthood out of other abortion providers in how it wrote the provision, which bars Medicaid funding for one year. While the provision does not explicitly name Planned Parenthood, the organization is the only abortion provider that falls under the restrictions outlined in the bill.

I don't see how the judge's TRO can hold up considering it flies in the face of law as enacted by Congress and signed into law by the President. Her ruling surely flies in the face of the recent SCOTUS decisions regarding the power of local judges.
