China's New Virus Outbreak Explained

News reports and social media posts are warning of a new outbreak of a little-known virus called human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China, but officials are yet to confirm this.

Instead, official reports from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention indicate that rates of multiple flu-like illnesses are on the rise in China, according to data up to the last week of 2024.

That data suggests that influenza is leading the outbreak, with 30.2 percent of tests coming back positive for it—an increase of 6.2 from the previous week—and 17.7 percent of people hospitalized with a severe respiratory illness testing positive for it.

However, that same dataset indicates that rates of HMPV are ahead of other flu-like diseases—such as COVID-19, rhinovirus and adenovirus—linked to 6.2 percent of positive respiratory illness tests and 5.4 percent of respiratory-illness hospitalizations in China.

‘Respiratory Virus’ Allegedly Overwhelming Chinese Hospitals is Nothing More Than a Common Cold

A little-known virus is supposedly rampaging through China, bringing back memories of the nightmare that was the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemics.

According to MailOnline, the wave of infections is straining hospitals across the country, prompting a resurgence in the use of face masks.

Videos posts on social media show seemingly overcrowded medical facilities struggling to manage an influx of patients, with reports of some creamtoriums being overwhelmed with bodies.

While there are said to be a string of viruses including flu, influenza, rhinovirus and COVID-19 that people are suffering from, many scientists believe the surge is caused by a little-known virus called human metapneumovirus (HMPV).

The Cleveland Clinic explains:

Human metapneumovirus most often causes symptoms similar to a cold, but some people can get very sick. You’re more likely to get severely sick the first time you get HMPV, which is why young kids have a greater risk for serious illness.

You get some protection (immunity) from your first infection and then are more likely to have mild, cold-like symptoms if you get another HMPV infection. Adults over 65 and people with breathing problems or a weakened immune system may also get severe symptoms.

There aren’t any antiviral medications that treat human metapneumovirus. Most people can manage their symptoms at home until they feel better.

If you or your child are severely ill, you might need to be admitted to the hospital. There, healthcare providers can monitor your condition and help prevent you from getting sicker.
