Will the Holy Spirit be indwelling believers during the tribulation?

RonJohnSilver

Well-known
The key word is 'indwelling.' I know the HS will be active during the tribulation time, how else could people come to faith? My question concerns the indwelling function only. I've heard it somewhere (?) that the Spirit's indwelling was/is for the church believers only. The proof text is from Matt. 25 where Jesus talks about those who did or didn't help the Jews in some manner. That, some say, shows that, during that tribulation time, the proof or evidence of true salvation is shown by treatment of the Jews or lack thereof. Not salvation by works but salvation PROOF by works. It's sort of a return to O.T. times where faith or belief was shown/proven by behavior or obedience. That makes sense to me but I'm looking for more Biblical proof if there is any. Or is this just reading more into the text than is there?

I think that this teaching was derived from the following event in Scripture-- because the Church is made up exclusively of believers indwelled by the Holy Spirit, when the Church is taken up in the Rapture the conclusion is that there will be no people left who are indwelled by the Holy Spirit. But, honestly, this is an interpretation of Scripture, not a plain statement of it.

2 Thessalonians 2:6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
2 Thessalonians 2:7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
2 Thessalonians 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

The verses above seem to at least imply that the Holy Spirit will be taken out of the way in some manner. That is assuming it is speaking of the Holy Spirit. As I am not gifted with the understanding of Prophecy, this is just what I have been taught. :noidea:

Remember that the Tribulation is the last 7 years of the Mosaic Dispensation. That program will resume. However, some individuals were indwelt by the Spirit for special tasks in the OT. So, as a general rule, believers in the Trib will not he indwelt. I think the two witnesses will be indwelt and perhaps the 144,000 Jews who are chosen to perform a special task.

There's a difference between the "indwelling" of The Holy Spirit and The Pouring Out of The Holy Spirit as will be done during The Tribulation.
The Holy Spirit is Omnipresent.
The Holy Spirit never stops working as part of The Triune Godhead. Just as The Holy Spirit was Poured out Upon Gods people, like The Prophets in the OT to do the work of The Will of God Through them, The Holy Spirit will also be Poured Out Upon those God uses to do His Will during the Tribulation such as The Two Witnesses, and the 144,000.
The indwelling of The Holy Spirit within The Body of Christ has multi purposes that we are used for to edify one another as the Church, and in Sharing the Gospel, and to set us apart as The Bride of Christ, but the one in particular purpose was to be the "guaranteed deposit" of our Salvation and the benefits in glory that comes with our Salvation.
Ephesians 1:3-14
2 Corinthians 1:22
Those who God uses for His Will during the Tribulation will have The Holy Spirit coming Upon them, but not indwelling them.
The Holy Spirit will also be sealing Gods people at that time.

Here is an explanation on the differences between the indwelling and the coming upon of The Holy Spirit by Jack Kelley that may be helpful

The Holy Spirit, In Us And Upon Us

Q: Recently, our pastor gave a message on the Holy Spirit regarding the Greek words ‘en’ and ‘epi’ (the Holy Spirit being ‘in’ a Christian and ‘upon’ a Christian) and said there was a difference. He explained that ‘en’ happened at the time of salvation, which I already knew, of course, but the ‘epi’ , I had not heard of before happened when a Christian had a deeper relationship with Christ and then would receive miracles and blessings. I know blessings happen when we are in fellowship with Christ. I didn’t know about the Holy Spirit being upon us as different from being in us. I would like your thoughts on this and did I understand him correctly?

A: Three Greek words are used to define the role of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life. Para means “with” and applies to everyone before the Resurrection. Eperchomai (a compound form of epi and erchomai) means to “come upon” and describes events in Acts 2, Acts 10:44, and Acts 19:6, resulting there in the manifestation of tongues. En means “in” and refers to the result of having heard and believed the Gospel, as in Ephesians 1:13-14.

Taken together, these passages agree that the Lord sealed the Holy Spirit within you at the moment of belief, determined what gift(s) you would need to make your unique contribution to the body, and invested you accordingly. From time to time, for His own purposes, He might also cause the Holy Spirit to “come upon” you to perform a special assignment.

I would really like to see someone defend the epi is "when a Christian had a deeper relationship with Christ and then would receive miracles and blessings."

I don't know if you are familiar with the website
Gracethrufaith.com but many people have submitted questions to Jack Kelley who founded this website and he provides biblical answers to questions submitted.
As you can see, what you are asking a defense for was part of the question submitted, but in the answer to the question Jack Kelley provided the substance of the question as noted in the title with a biblical answer in the differences between the indwelling and the coming upon of The Holy Spirit and as for the additional comments from the person asking the question such as whether the person receives "miracles and blessings" which maybe was referring to the "spiritual gifts" of The Holy Spirit, doesn't necessarily apply to someone having a "special" relationship with Christ, which Jack didn't specifically go into that in his answer. He only covered the main point as was given in the title of the question he answered.
Personally, I think having a "special" relationship with Christ isn't how believers receive the gifts.
Certainly a believer should be in good standing in their walk with Jesus, but The Holy Spirit gives the gifts according His choosing.

4 "For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. 6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith; 7 or ministry, let us use it in our ministering; he who teaches, in teaching; 8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness."
Romans 12:4-8

Perhaps The Holy Ghost indwelling occurs again when the sealing of God's servants happens.

Whether or not Tribulation saints are indwelt
I hope they are, because faith is going to be harder then than it's ever been, anywhere.
It's so easy in the U.S., and there is no way I'd have even the itty-bitty, teeny-tiny, scrap of a mustard seed of faith I have without The Holy Ghost.

  :amen: :amen: :thankyou: :thankyou:
