What is the New Jerusalem?

In Revelation 21:1 God does a complete make-over of heaven and earth (cf. Isaiah 65:17; 2 Peter 3:12–13). The new heaven and new earth are what some call the eternal state and will be “where righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13). After the re-creation, God reveals the New Jerusalem. John sees a glimpse of it in his vision: “The Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband” (Revelation 21:2). This is the city that Abraham looked for in faith (Hebrews 11:10). It is the place where God will dwell with His people forever (Revelation 21:3). Inhabitants of this celestial city will have all tears wiped away (Revelation 21:4).

Who are the residents of the New Jerusalem? The Father and the Lamb are there (Revelation 21:22). Angels are at the gates (verse 12). But the city will be filled with God’s redeemed children. I wonder if it's a new 3rd heaven or the heaven as in space ?

If it's the 3rd heaven , i wonder whether it was due to Satan previously having access there and it's God's way of symbollically cleansing it

The third Heaven is God's dwelling place.
God is Creating a New Heaven and the former Heaven wont exist anymore......

"Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away". Revelation 21:1

When God Creates the New Heaven and New Earth, He will dwell with mankind.

"And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God." Revelation 21:3

Seems to me that God is merging His dwelling place in The Newly Created Heaven with the New Earth.
Its a Divine geographical merging that is difficult to comprehend as to how it would look in our imperfect human minds.
But I would think The New Jerusalem wont be directly ON The Earth, but will be within the vicinity of the Earth, probably visibly seen by those dwelling the the Earth.
I couldn't say this is absolute, but is just an imagined perspective.......

I imagine it could be like God's Holy City could be hovering within Close proximity over the Earth, close enough so He would still be dwelling in Heaven, yet be dwelling with mankind. Maybe visible to those dwelling on the Earth
Jesus will rule over the Earth forever beyond the Millennium, , and while His dwelling place will be in The New Jerusalem, it could be sorta like how in the US we have Governors living in a Governor's mansion, while Governing over a State.

All I can say is however God's plan pans out, it will all be perfect and and when He completes His New Creation of Heaven and Earth it will be Good and will lack nothing
