THE COMING TEMPLE

Andy C

Well-known
According to Prophecies in Daniel 9:27, Matt 24:15 and 2 Thes 2:4, a Temple will exist in Israel at the beginning of the Great Tribulation. This is confirmed by Revelation 11:1 which describes John measuring a Temple during the Tribulation. Its location is the “Holy City.” Chapter 11 also introduces the 2 witnesses who preach in the “Great City” and are ultimately killed there, their bodies left lying in the street. The Great City is identified as the place where the Lord was crucified: Jerusalem. But is Jerusalem also the Holy City?

According to Zechariah 14:4 and 6-9 on the day of the Lord’s return an earthquake will split the Mt. of Olives in two along an East-West line that creates a great valley through the center of Jerusalem. Immediately a river will fill the valley creating a waterway from the Mediterranean to the Dead Sea. If the Lord returns to the same area of the Mt. of Olives from which He left, as suggested by Acts 1:11, the earthquake creating this East-West valley will destroy the current Temple mount and anything that may be standing upon it. On that same day, living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half the the eastern (Dead) sea and half to the western (Mediterranean) sea.

Ezekiel 47:1-12 describes a great river flowing from under the south side of the Temple and then eastward to the Dead Sea during a period of time that most scholars believe has not occurred yet. Revelation 22:1-2 confirms this. If as it appears, Ezekiel, Zechariah, and Revelation all describe the same river, then an interesting scenario begins to emerge.

This scenario requires a Temple to be present on the day the Lord returns, but since the current Temple mount will have been destroyed by the earthquake mentioned above, this Temple must be somewhere else.

Where Are The 12 Tribes?

Using the boundaries of the Promised Land given in Ezekiel 47:13-20, and plotting the land grants for the 12 tribes listed in Ezekiel 48:1-29 on a map of Israel, places the precincts of the Holy City somewhat north of the current City of Jerusalem. This new location is the ancient City of Shiloh, where the Tabernacle stood for nearly 400 years after the Israelites first conquered the Land. This is the Holy City and its name is Jehovah Shammah according to the last verse in Ezekiel. The Hebrew translates as “the LORD is here.” Since Shiloh is north of Jerusalem, the river that originates from the south side of the Temple will have to flow south for a time before intersecting with the east-west channel created by the earthquake.
If accurate, this location would meet all the requirements for the Temple mentioned in the above references. The current Temple Mount in Jerusalem would not.

According to Ezekiel 44:6-9, this Temple will have been defiled in a way never seen in history, therefore at a time yet future to us. A foreigner un-circumsized in heart (neither Christian) and flesh (nor Jewish) will have been given charge of the sanctuary while offering sacrifices. If we understand the chronology of Ezekiel, this event will have taken place after both the 1948 re-gathering prophesied in 36-37and the national wake-up call prophesied in 38-39 but before the Millennial Kingdom begins. The only event we know of that fits that chronology is the Great Tribulation. This is confirmed by Paul’s prophecy of 2 Thes. 2:4 where the anti christ sets himself up in the Temple proclaiming himself to be god.

Here then is a rough outline of events. Following Israel’s return to God after the battle of Ezekiel 38-39, the Jewish people will re-establish their covenant (old not new) with Him. This will require a return to Levitical practices and so a Temple will be built. This is the Temple spoken of by Daniel and Revelation. Following instructions given by Ezekiel and needing to avoid the enormous problems a Jerusalem Temple would create in the Moslem world, this Temple will be located north of Jerusalem in Shiloh.

It will be defiled in the middle of the last 7 years as outlined in Daniel 9:24-27, Ezekiel 44:6-9, Matt 24:15 and 2 Thes 2:4 kicking off the Great Tribulation, but will be cleansed by living water that begins flowing on the day the Lord returns (Zech 14:8). This temple will be used during the Millennium to memorialize the Lord’s work at the cross and provide the perspective for children born during the Kingdom Age to choose salvation just as you and I have had the perspective of the Lord’s Supper in making our choice. Remember, He said, “Do this in memory of Me until I come.” Acts 15:14-16 confirms that after the Lord has chosen a people from among the gentiles for Himself (the church) He will return and re-build David’s fallen Tabernacle (the Temple). This is the Millennial Temple so vividly described inEzekiel 40-48.

The New Jerusalem

The Ezekiel passage also solves the Jerusalem / New Jerusalem problem. For as long as I’ve been studying these things, there has been debate over the issue of the New Jerusalem. Some wonder how the Lord could permit redeemed believers and non- believing natural humans to co-exist in the Millennium. (The rotten apple spoiling the barrel theory) Others wonder how a city with a foot print 1400 miles square and tall could be located in Israel when the whole country won’t be that big.

Carefully examining Rev 21 and 22, we notice that John never actually says the city arrives on earth. We are only told he sees it coming down out of heaven, prepared as a bride. (Not that the city IS the bride, but that as with a bride on her wedding day, no effort has been spared to make it look its absolute best.)

I don’t believe the city ever rests on the Earth’s surface, but rather orbits in the proximity of Earth, like a satellite or perhaps another moon.
Also comparing the descriptions of New Jerusalem with Jehovah Shammah we see some similarities but enough differences to refute the notion that John and Ezekiel described the same place. Compare the following:

New Jerusalem
(All verses from Rev.)
Jehovah Shammah
(All verses from Ezekiel)
12 gates named after Israel (21:12)12 gates named after Israel (48:30)
12 foundations named after Apostles (21:14)Foundation not described
1400 miles square and tall (21:16)One mile square (48:30)
Coming Down from heaven (21:2)Located in Israel on Earth (40:2)
No Temple … God and the Lamb are its Temple (21:22)Temple just north of the city (40:2)
No sin; nothing impure will ever enter (21:27)Daily sin offerings in the Temple (45:13-15,17)
No more death (21:4)Still death (44:25 also Isa 65:20)
No natural beings … only the perfected (21:27)Natural Beings (46:16)
With the differentiation of these two Holy Cities, the apparent conflict between Jewish and Christian eschatology is resolved. Israel was promised that one day GOD would come to Earth to dwell among them forever, while the Church is promised that Jesus will come to take us to heaven to live with Him there. Both promises come true.

Since Ezekiel specifically quoted the Lord’s promise to dwell among the Israelites forever (43:7) and then described the new Holy City, while Jesus promised to return for the Church to take us to be with Him (John 14:1-3), they must have been talking about two different destinations. They were. Heaven is the New Jerusalem where we will dwell with the Lord forever, while the Holy City on Earth is Jehovah Shammah where God will dwell in the midst of His people Israel forever.

New Jerusalem is a massive structure and I enjoy periodic updates on what people think and visualize it to be and how it will sit on or above the earth. The final MK temple is its own massive structure/complex with buildings and beauty all around it. Very exciting.

Hi Andy,

Quite a few topics there.

1. The Temple that the A/C will get his image put in is already built.

The Third Temple - Where?

To be categorically exact regarding Israel's function as the "Catalyst for the Countdown", one further event was specified as a prerequisite. This was the temple with its inner sanctum, The Holy Place"; according to the signs predicted by Jesus (Matt 24:15) and Paul (2 Thess 2:4).

Many commentators have relegated this to the obscure future, because they consider the temple has to be constructed on Mount Moriah, the site of Herod's temple. The
insurmountable object of course, is that the Dome of the Rock, the second most holy place of Islam, already occupies that position.

This is an entirely false premise, however, that has created confusion. The Temple built by Solomon, the Temple frequented by Jesus and His Disciples were both built on Mount Moriah. Ezekiel predicts that another will be constructed on the same place after Jesus returns in Glory.

Every reference to all three Temples on this site was a translation of the Greek Word "Hieron".

Any "Temple" erected elsewhere was invariably from the Greek word "Naos". This word is frequently rendered "Meeting Place", "Dwelling" or "Synagogue". It is the later word "Naos" that is used by Paul (2 Thess 2:4) in reference to the Temple used by contemporary Israel. It has absolutely no connection exegetically with the site on Mt. Moriah. In fact there is no prerequisite for it to be built there. To the contrary, in line with Greek usage, it must be constructed elsewhere.

The Embassy of Israel advises that on August 1982, in the Presence of the Prime Minister, Menachem Begin, Members of Cabinet and many other notables, the Jerusalem great Synagogue was dedicated. It is situated in King George Street, and is constructed from the same local stone as was Solomon's Temple. The central feature is a high tower containing five magnificent stained-glass windows, topped by two tablets of stone, bearing the Ten Commandments.

The Temple referred to by Paul is built!

In the interior, marble has been used extensively, especially for the Ark situated beneath the stained-glass windows. This I believe is the Holy Place which will be desecrated by the "Abomination of Desolation" referred to by Jesus (Matthew 24:15)

The countdown is well on the way.

I agree that the New Jerusalem is above the earth as all the nations walk in its light. (Rev. 21: 24) However we are told that the New Jerusalem is in the New Heavens and New Earth time.

2. The New Jerusalem.

THE NEW HEAVENS and NEW EARTH.

There is a specific time when God will purge and purify the heavens and the earth by fire.

And I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. (Rev. 21: 1)

It is the time when God in the highest heaven makes all things new for His sons Israel, in the New Jerusalem and Israel and the nations on earth. Thus the new city made by God in heaven is complete with the appointed people and so descends to its appropriate area near the earth. It is here that the nations of the world will be guided and ruled.

Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God,... (Rev. 21: 2)

The New Jerusalem is thus the Administrative centre for God`s rulership through Israel over the earth. It is also the means whereby God connects and interlocks the spiritual and physical realms. The symbol of this is the Bride, representing this connecting and interlocking. (Rev. 21: 2 & 3)

Here we see the fulfilment of what God had promised to Israel. (Isaiah 54) God promised to Israel that He would come and dwell with them and they would know His presence and His glory in their midst. Excluded from this wonderful life are those who have turned away from God. (Rev. 21: 4 – 8)

THE NEW JERUSALEM

`Then one of the 7 angels who had the 7 bowls filled with the 7 last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, “Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb`s wife.” (Rev. 21: 9)

Now one of the angels who showed the Apostle John the great harlot, calls him to come and see the great city of God, `the bride, the Lamb`s wife.` This we know is all those who looked by faith for this city. They resided in the General Assembly till the time for them to descend in the city to their rightful place in the lower heavens. (the Universal heavens)

you have come to....the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem ... to the General Assembly ... to the spirits of just men (Old Testament saints) made perfect. (Heb. 12: 23)

From the great and high mountain, the heavenly Mount Zion, John is able to see the great city, the holy Jerusalem descend from the third heaven to the lower heavens, the Universal heavens just above the earth.

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God. (Rev. 21: 10)

Now we see the New Jerusalem as not only the dwelling place of God in the midst of His people but the place where He can manifest His great glory. This glory comes through the power and authority of the Lord Jesus Christ.

the great city....having the glory of God. (Rev. 21: 11)

The light, like a jasper stone presents Jesus as the mighty conqueror, the one through whom all this is made possible.

And her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. (Rev. 21: 11)

Jasper – Tribe of Naphtali – meaning Conqueror. (Gen. 30: 8)

The Government of the City - Kings.

The Gates - the Inheritance - access to the city.

`Also she had a great and high wall with 12 gates, and 12 angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the 12 tribes of Israel: three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west. (Rev. 21: 12 & 13)

Gates are the entrance to a city and give access to what is within. These represent where the wise men and councillors of the city would sit to rule and give judgment of cases. The 12 tribes are represented there with their covering angels. This is the promised inheritance to Israel - a heavenly city.

they all died in faith, not having received the promises....Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them. (Heb. 11: 9, 10 & 16)

The Walls - the Kings. Protection and Security.

Walls are for protection and here they represent Christ`s government ruling in the city.

Now the wall of the city had 12 foundations, and on them were the 12 apostles of the Lamb. (Rev. 21: 14)

The 12 apostles were promised rulership over the 12 tribes of Israel. Their rulership is under Christ, so it is just and righteous. Thrones symbolise rulership - kings.

you who have followed me will also sit on 12 thrones, judging the 12 tribes of Israel. (Matt. 19: 28)

The City - The Covenant: faith in God.

And he who talked with me had a gold reed to measure the city,.... (Rev. 21: 15)

The gold reed, speaks of faith in what God has promised. These people believed that God would take them to this city in the heavenlies. The shape is that of the Holy of Holies and is the place where God dwells by His Spirit and speaks to His people.

And the city is laid out as a square and its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed; 12 thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal. (Rev. 21: 16)

Furlongsa fixed measurement - fig. a covenant. (Gk. stao,)

The Government of the City - Priests.

The Priesthood - l44 cubits of the wall.

Then he measured its wall: 144 cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel. (Rev. 21: 17)

This foundation of God`s government is the 12 apostles, kings ruling. Then we read of the Priesthood with them. They are symbolised by the 144 cubits. This is what God promised to Israel.

And you shall be to me a kingdom of Priests and a holy nation. (Ex. 19: 6)

These Priests are revealed to us when God sealed them at the beginning of the tribulation.

They came from every tribe in Israel, 12 x 12 = 144,000.

`Do not harm the earth, the sea, or the trees till we have sealed the servants of our God on their foreheads. And I heard the number of those who were sealed.
144,000 of all the tribes of the children of Israel were sealed.` (Rev. 14: 1 – 5)

These 144,000 Priests are also shown with the Lord on Mount Zion.

`Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion and with Him 144,000, having His Father`s name written on their foreheads.` (Rev. 14: 1)

These 144,000 are described as priests. They have followed the Lamb and not false religions, or idols etc. They are pure, symbolised by being virgins.

These are the ones who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. (Rev. 14: 4)

The walls, the government in this city, is of the Lord. This is symbolised by jasper, gold and clear glass. All of which are found in relation to the Lord and His throne. (Rev. 4: 3 - 6)

And the construction of its walls was of jasper, and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. (Rev. 21: 18)

The Precious Stones - Christ`s Rulership.

The foundations of the walls are adorned with all kinds of precious stones. These were on the priest`s breastplate and represent Christ`s rulership. (Ex. 28: 15 – 21)

Judgment – Heb. mishpat, meaning judgment, divine law, rulership.

`And the foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones: the 1st foundation was the jasper, the 2nd sapphire, the 3rd chalcedony,
the 4th emerald, the 5th sardonyx, the 6th sardius, the 7th chrysolite, the 8th beryl, the 9th topaz, the 10th chrysoprase, the 11th jacinth, & the 12th amethyst.`
(Rev. 21: 19 & 20)

Christ the Conqueror.

1.Jasper – Naphtali - Conqueror.
2.Sapphire – Simeon – voice of God.
3.Chalcedony – Zebulon - dwelling.

Christ the conqueror, is the voice of God dwelling with His people.

Christ the KingPriest.

4.Emerald – Reuben - first born, Heir.
5.Sardonyx – Asher - blessing, Priest.

6.Sardius – Judah - King, ruler.

Christ the first born and heir rules as KingPriest giving spiritual blessings.

Christ the Judge.

7.Chrysolite – Gad - administers judgments with justice.
8.Beryl – Dan. - Judge.
9.Topaz – Issachar - wisdom.

Christ the wise Judge who administers judgments with justice.

Christ at the Father`s Right Hand.

10. Chrysoprase – Manassah forgiveness
11. Jacinth – Ephraim - doubly fruitful.
12. Amethyst – Benjamin - At the right hand of the Father.

Christ at the Father`s right hand gives forgiveness & blessing.

(The Stones – Ex: 28: 17 – 21, The Tribes – Num. 10: 14 – 27, The Meanings – Gen. 29: 32, 30: 1 – 24, 35: 18)

(Ref: `Fires before the Dawn, by Ps. A. Gardiner. )
A very creative theory indeed from this pastor Gardiner. Sadly, it is fanciful. And easily proven so.

The Temple in Jerusalem is not exclusively referred to in the New Testament by the Greek word ἱερόν (hieron) as the pastor emphatically states. It is also referred as ναός (naos). Just a couple of examples are iwhen the Pharisees challenge Jesus over the destruction and rebuilding of the temple in Mark 15:48; and in Matthew 23:16 when Jesus speaks of the foolishness of swearing by the temple. I assure you there are a number of others.

But even more compelling to me is the fact that when the 70 Jewish scholars translated the Old Testament into the Greek starting around 250 years before Christ, what Greek word did these experts in Hebrew and Greek use to translate the word Temple when referring to Solomon's and Herod's and Ezekiel's temples? You guessed it: ναός.

As to the idea that the temple might be built elsewhere, these ideas come from outliers. The fact is that Jewish tradition, historical documents, and even mainstream Israeli archeology claim that the Eben Shesiyah (in Jewish lore the rock upon which the world was founded and the proper resting place of the Ark of the Covenant) sits on the Dome of the Rock, under the Islamic temple. Those who look for an alternative location are cut from the same cloth as those in history who could not imagine God could recreate Israel, and thus they expended a lot of mental energy seeking other locations. Well we know God had no difficulty recreating the nation of Israel in its traditional homeland.

So, myself, I choose to believe God. The temple will be built exactly where the other temples stood-- Mount Moriah.

l44 cubits of the wall.

Then he measured its wall: 144 cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel. (Rev. 21: 17)
We can take God literally. The new Jerusalem will be so large that our imagination can’t grasp it, but because understanding that is beyond our grasp we need to exercise caution and not get lulled into manmade explanations. It’s easy for us to fall for teachers who allegorize, especially when they dress it up with flowery lingo.
