USPS already lost $1.3 billion this year — and cash shortages might halt mail delivery in 2027

The cash-strapped United States Postal Service is barreling toward a financial cliff, with Postmaster General David Steiner warning lawmakers the agency could run dry by October — and potentially halt mail delivery altogether by 2027 if Congress doesn’t step in.

“At our current rate, we’ll be out of cash in less than 12 months,” Steiner told the House Oversight Subcommittee on Government Operations on March 17.
“So in about a year from now, the Postal Service would be unable to deliver the mail.”
Translation: no stamps, no service.

But the bad news doesn’t stop at the mailbox.
The Postal Service may also be losing one of its biggest partners: Amazon.

Junk mail volume is probably greatly decreased since its heyday since now there are other ways of reaching people. The article talks about the USPS possibly losing Amazon as a customer. That probably wouldn't be a loss as Amazon has had a propensity for shipping agreements that strongly favor Amazon while leaving the shipper out to dry. I can't imagine there being a good solution outside of taxpayer funding if the service is going to continue.

If we remember our government was considering Privatizing mail delivery.
Maybe this is the catalyst of what will make that happen? If it does, we will pay to have our mail delivered.

From last year:

The USPS, which employs approximately 640,000 workers, posted a $9.5 billion loss in the fiscal year ending September 2024. This latest effort is part of a broader attempt to curb costs as the agency grapples with calls for privatization and potential restructuring under President Donald Trump's administration.

When my daughter was working for USPS she was working 12-13 hour days 6 days a week. They were short handed in that town and didn't seem to have a desire to hire enough employees to handle the work without overworking people. Very few can last very long with those kinds of hours. While at other locations the jobs were pretty easy with more normal hours. USPS definitely needs someone who can remake the organization from the top down. Even so, the service might continue to need taxpayer dollars to survive.

One of the USPS people to whom I referred is a member here. He works the same kind of hours as your daughter did. He's a strong young man in his early 30s and he is so worn out all the time. And management doesn't seem prepared to hire more workers rather than work existing people into the ground with 60-70-80 hour weeks. He has a wife and three little girls and does not really get to enjoy them as he would like.

That is extremely upsetting that he can’t even enjoy his family.

Considering the pay and benefits, it's no wonder that USPS is running out of $ and reluctant to hire workers.

There is something very wrong when entry level jobs pay more than entry level white collar jobs.

Letter carriers used to walk and drive relatively inexpensive vehicles, which they parked along the way. Now they drive expensive vehicles, don't walk, and have hours to sit around, idling, burning gas, and dong nothing.

Counter clerks are allowed to abuse customers and other employees, and depending on who's involved, supervisors can't or won't do anything.

There's wholesale stealing of mail at the big sorting facility here. The only people, who received their second letter from President Trump, were those, whose envelopes contained a check. Mail was delayed 30 or more days at that time. I'm beginning to wonder if my new passport card has been stolen. I have my new passport, old passport, and old passport card, but not the new passport card.
