US to construct half a billion-dollar military base near Gaza to supervise ceasefire – report

The U.S. is planning to establish a new military base in Israel near the Gaza Strip that could house thousands of soldiers to supervise and maintain the ceasefire with Hamas, Ynet News reported on Tuesday.

According to the report that is based on information obtained by Shomrim, a nonprofit news organization, the U.S. is coordinating its plans with the Israeli government and the IDF and is already in the process of examining potential sites.

“This shows just how determined they are to be involved in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” a security source said.

This is unusual for Israel to allow such a foreign military presence on its soil. If it were in support of any other country I'd be against the US involvement, but I'm 100% for supporting Israel in any way we can. Time will tell if this move is a good thing or not.

Bad idea. Hamas would love nothing more than to kill a few infidels which would just invite a response. We can support Israel without getting our military actively involved. Some of Trump's latest moves have been strange; this, the 50 year mortgage, and the $2K payout are a few examples. He's just giving the democrats ammunition for the midterms.

A base there would be very strategic. Excellent idea.

We have military personnel all around the world, and many are in a hostile environment. Risks comes with the job.

As long as the U.S. is supporting and protecting Israel, this is a good thing.
However, if this ever changes, that military base is a beachhead and fortification against Israel.

  :amen: :amen: :thankyou: :thankyou:

FWIW, I'd go back in a heartbeat. When I had the opportunity, I was taking care of elderly Dad, and now I can't do my military job anymore [sigh]

I would too, but I don’t think there’s a RE code cripple :prophet:

Of course there is always a risk involved when troops are in hostile areas. IMHO this is just inviting an attack which would draw us deeper into the conflict.

We already have bases in the area that can take care of situations that develop. There are eight permanent bases in the area already. In addition to attacks, I see this more of the U.S. limiting Israeli involvement in Gaza. Some may think this is a good idea, there have been huge protests in the U.S. over Gaza recently.

According to Pentagon figures collated by Al Jazeera, between 40,000 and 50,000 U.S. troops are presently spread across at least nineteen installations from Egypt's Mediterranean coast to Oman's Arabian Sea shoreline. Eight of those sites are classified as permanent, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), while the remainder are "enduring" or "contingency" outposts that can swell or shrink as operations demand.

This base is going to be for the multinational forces that are supposed to manage things in gaza, thus the location. There may not be many or any US personnel there most of the time. Too soon to know though...

Hope it's a NON-UN multinational force, maybe patterned after the Multinational Forces and Observers (MFO) in the Sinai.

I think Trump has specifically not invited the UN to be involved. I hope that's the case. I doubt Israel would permit UN involvement after UN entities were fighting and working right along side hamas all this time.

I think it'd be far, far better for the multinational force to be on the Israel side of the border. Minefields, topography, politics, religion, treaty "interpretations," occasional clock mismatches between the Israelis and Egyptians, physical set-up of the crossing, etc. make Rafah crossing "interesting," subject to abrupt closures, and hazardous to bypass. If the multinational forces are needed in Gaza, it would be too easy for the Egyptians to keep them from crossing from Egypt to Israel. Considering the muslim political and religious situation in Egypt and Gaza, and USSR Gog presence in Egypt, the multinational forces would be far safer on the Israeli side of the border, no matter where.

Definitely different than crossing the US-Canadian border.
