US F-15E fighter jet shot down over Iran

This is a developing story.

A United States F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet has been shot down by enemy fire over Iran, U.S. officials confirmed.

One of the aircraft’s two crew members has been rescued, Israeli media first reported. U.S. officials confirmed the reports in statements to CBS News and Axios.

A search for the second crew member is ongoing

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Military Times “the president has been briefed” on the downed fighter jet.

The source additionally confirmed that one of the two pilots of the jet was rescued, and search and rescue operations are underway to locate the second.

A local television station operated by the state-owned Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) aired an announcement declaring that there would be a reward issued to any civilians who could capture or locate the US pilots and turn them in to law enforcement.

I haven't heard anything yet whether the US has officially "declared war" with Iran.
As of March 13, 2026 declaration of war still had not been made

I would think this shooting down of a US military aircraft constitutes official declaration of war.

This wont be a declared war, and will likely be over in 2 weeks.

Yep, Congress has to declare war. When they can't even fund TSA, I think the chances of that happening are about zero unless it's a clear existential threat even the Dems couldn't deny. A simple majority is required which could happen, but filibustering would keep it from coming to a vote in the Senate. Besides, the Dems probably wouldn't want a vote anyway because then they couldn't complain about King Trump.

Second American fighter jet crashes in Persian Gulf area around same time F-15E shot down, pilot safely rescued

A second US fighter plane crashed in the Persian Gulf area Friday — and the lone pilot was safely rescued, according to US officials.

The A-10 Warthog attack plane fell to the ground near the Strait of Hormuz at roughly the same time an Air Force F-15E was shot down over Iran, two US officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told the New York Times.

Few other details were immediately known about the A-10 crash, including where it happened and how the plane was downed.
