IAEA chief: Extent of damage at Fordo unclear, but there are ‘clear indications of impacts’​

The head of the UN nuclear watchdog says he does not know the extent of damage at the key Fordo nuclear facility after US airstrikes overnight.

“There are clear indications of impacts,” IAEA chief Rafael Grossi tells CNN, “but as for the assessment for the degree of damage underground, on this we cannot pronounce ourselves.”
“No one could tell you how much it has been damaged,” he continues. He adds that because of observed changes in the shape of the sites, “one cannot exclude that there is significant damage there.”

Grossi says that the Natanz above-ground facility has been “completely destroyed,” while its underground halls “suffered a lot” because of cuts to electricity as the result of Israeli attacks.
The Isfahan site has also suffered “very significant damage,” Grossi says.

Fordo, says Grossi, would not be damaged by powers cuts because it has internal emergency electricity sources.
Grossi stresses that the IAEA “did not have elements to prove that Iran had a plan toward a nuclear weapon.”

The US is quoted as saying that
Fordow nuclear facility was "obliterated".
Iran is claiming there was "limited surface damage" done to it.
Also reports that the US and Israel are "accessing the damage"

Pretty good groups tho. Hopefully the wound channels were more impressive. The way the bombs were hyped, I'd of thought the whole mountainside would be rubble.

I expected the top of the mountain to be blown off too. I guess if the force of the blasts were contained in the mountain that might mean more damage to the areas cleared out and developed. Maybe it'll collapse in on itself at a later day.

Before this is over Israel may need to send in a team on the ground to see whether or not more destruction is needed at the site... if there is currently a way to enter and exit...

I take this report with skepticism. I am wary of "anonymous" reports and anything coming from the New York Times. Only time will tell if activity resumes in the Fordow facility and whatever information Israeli or US intelligence produces

Both can be true.

Fordow was deep underground. The reports I listened to said 6 MOPS for Fordow, corresponding to the 6 entry holes. When those things explode, they were going off deep underground, so I would think the damage would be extensive in the caves and tunnels that were carved out for this facility.

The force of the explosion should be deep at the underground site, and the blast should concentrate on the tunnels and rooms, going sideways in the path of least resistance.

That means that at the entry points you should see a bit of debris kicked back up from the entry holes, but not much more.

The best part is that radiation should be nicely contained, since the only exit points, are where the MOPS went in.

Iran is trying to save face- limited surface damage should be true- it's what's underground that counts.

Another thing to watch with interest are the effects on Russia and China.

China gets most of it's oil from Iran. They pay in Chinese currency not in US dollars, so Iran has to buy from China. Win win for both up till now.

China NEEDS oil to survive- it's factories, transportation and army/navy/airforce require oil. They prefer the lighter crude from Iran, and don't want to deal too much with their old frenemy Russia.


Russia gets most of it's drones from Iran (made from Chinese parts). This could impact the war in Ukraine.

Unintended side effects will bite. They depended on Iran, now Iran is in trouble, and this will have trickle down consequences to the war stances of BOTH China and Iran.

Remember, the Japanese entered World War II because they feared the loss of their sources of critical supplies such as oil, rubber, coal and iron caused by America's growing dominance in the Asia-Pacific area. I was just listening to the Jews News Service team here - YouTube with Caroline Glick's old boss Alex Treimann interviewing an Israeli Military Analyst.

One of the things he brought up is why there is so little surface damage- and it's pretty much that the force of the explosion is deep underground. Physics. The force of the explosion follows the path of least resistance. So once the bomb goes off deep underground, it will push outwards towards any weaker areas next to a tunnel, and then right thru tunnels and underground rooms. Almost like being able to direct the explosion where you want it. No wasted energy collapsing the mountain above, it's all directed at the nuclear stuff.

But there were a lot of weirdly satisfying details such as

Israel sent in their air force to continue to bomb Natanz and Isfahan for example to make sure things got obliterated.

Israel has noted that Iranians aren't able to send as many missiles- in spite of still having a good supply, because the IDF is doing pinpoint bombing on the trucks used. Staff in Iran are understandably reluctant to get into those trucks and operate the launchers.
