Trump claims Canada 'considering' offer of free Golden Dome in exchange for becoming 51st state

President Donald Trump purported on Tuesday that Canada was "considering" giving up its statehood in exchange for protection by the proposed "Golden Dome" missile defense system at no cost, despite Canadian officials repeatedly stating that the country is not for sale.

"I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
"They are considering the offer!" he claimed.

Trump has threatened in recent months to annex Canada, an idea fiercely rebuked by Canadian officials and their citizens.

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney, who secured an election win last month in part due to Canadians' opposition to Trump's wish to make the country part of the U.S., told Trump earlier this month that his country "won't be for sale, ever."

As for the "Golden Dome," Trump announced last week that the U.S. had officially selected the architecture for the missile defense system that would create a network of satellites to detect, track and potentially intercept incoming ballistic missiles.
The U.S. president said the project would cost $175 billion to build and that it was expected to be "fully operational" within three years. He also said Canada would be included in its safety net.

"Canada has called us, and they want to be a part of it. So we’ll be talking to them; they want to have protection also," Trump said at the time.

Carney’s office said last week that there were "active discussions" between the U.S. and Canada on current and new security programs, including the "Golden Dome."

Hmm, Trump's view and Canada's view may differ. your mileage may vary as the joke goes!!!

I'm still slightly shook up by a short 2 minute clip from our new PM Carney here: - YouTube

that I saw yesterday afternoon.

In which Carney deals with the fact that Canada will be making a major announcement regards NATO spending and it sounds like he will be pivoting AWAY from the States- and towards our partners in Europe!

There was a lot of stuff going on yesterday, but that clip left me shaken as to how fast we are folding into the new Europe.

The King's speech yesterday too

and something EXTREMELY odd that happened to me when I had to speak to a Service Canada person regards problems with a form. Normally when I press 1 for service in English it's in English.

This time she greeted me in French, I returned the favour, and then we switched to English (en Anglais, sil vous plait). That hasn't happened since the last time Quebec was in separation anxiety and normally they are very grumpy about talking in English when they are feeling it for separation. This had the flavour of a Canada first flex going on- as she was quite cheery, and unusually helpful.

Either I've entered the alternate universe or Quebec civil servants are unusually civil. THAT IS scary!!! @mattfivefour may appreciate how shook I was, the rest of you might just have to take my word for it.

Oh and that major announcement will be July 1 on Canada Day!

Line that up with Carney's hints about pivoting towards a European defence pact (and that has been happening a lot since just before the election) AND the hints dropped in the King's speech (written by Carney as is the usual for the King's speeches to Parliament- always supports the govt of the day)

and we could be folding into the Rome 2.0 version of Europe a lot faster than I'm ready for. (I need to brush up on my French)

@Hol YES! (you posted just before me)

That's part of why Trump wanted Carney. He didn't want Poislievre because that man wanted a strong independent Canada. Trump wanted a weak, dependent one. Looks like he's going to get it.

golden dome reminds me of the simpsons movie thru and thru.

What if the citizens of the United States don't want a 51st state? Whether Canada, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam, etc., etc., etc.

I don't want to have to buy a new flag . . .

And I suspect the First Nations may have something to say about Ottawa, which allegedly honors and respects First Nation sovereignty, making such a contrary decision about their lands on their "behalf"

Instead of Canada becoming the 51st state, it would be a lot fairer to lease the airspace from Canada so Golden Dome could be bigger and give more warning, since presumably most of the debris will fall north of the border.

Why would it be called Golden Dome?
Sounds a LOT like dome of the rock, with its golden dome, which is currently occupying/desecrating the Temple Mount :tap:

I don't believe in coincidences :tap:
You are right again!

No coincidence, but it's name comes from the Iron Dome that Israel designed, built and SHARED with the USA.

Not how Trump put it when he announced it. Nor did Trump acknowledge that ALL "aid" the Israeli's get has to be spent on US arms and military equipment which benefits the US and in return the Israeli's are not allowed to manufacture their own weapons. They are kind of stuck buying from the US and then when they invent something like the Iron Dome

The US can benefit.

It's actually a great arrangement for America- and people forget that Israel pays a price for that aid. When Trump "reminded" Netanyahu of all the US aid that Israel gets, he neglected a few details.

Then Trump announces this Golden Dome.

I wondered about the coincidence, did some digging. It's not quite the Iron Dome, for one thing it has to cover a much larger area- but it was based on the Iron Dome, which as usual Israel shared (and didn't receive acknowledgment)

As for Canada I was listening to more Canadian news this afternoon, and it sounds like Mark Carney is trying to get the US Canada trade deal out of the way before Trump's team grasps the idea of how much Canada will be spending in Europe for upgraded defence stuff.

then the American news came out that some judge has blocked all the tariffs on constitutional grounds as tariffs should be imposed by Congress, not by the President. So even that is up in the air.

As I wrote a friend this afternoon on the subject - who needs TV soap operas? Just the politics north and south of the border- quite enough drama as it is.

Yeah, I watched Iron Dome on TV. I was already retired when Gulf War II happened.
Neither it, nor the Patriots, as pretty as the old Sprint missile, but they got the job done.

Now there's Iron Beam and Light Shield, which cut costs and logistical support requirements for Iron Dome.
Looks like the U.S. got second-best, potentially obsolete, technology.

'Light Shield': IDF Used Lasers for the First Time to Intercept Hezbollah Rockets, Drones

The system, which has been in development for years, could dramatically cut costs on interceptor missiles, as those used in the Iron Dome system cost tens of thousands of dollars each.

Sorry, behind a paywall :headbang:
