The War of Tariffs: How Far Can Ego Go?

**** This is from a subscribed email from

Koenig Eye View From The White House****

By Tania Koenig

Donald Trump began his second term not just with political momentum, but with global reverence. At the 2024 reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, world leaders, kings, and queens stood to honor him—a gesture not born of ceremony, but of deep respect for his resilience. He had survived two assassination attempts, led a bold campaign against immense odds, and returned to the world stage carrying both gravitas and a defiant spirit.

President Trump’s initial diplomacy toward Vladimir Putin gave way to frustration. After weeks of behind-the-scenes talks, he told NBC News he was now “very angry” with Putin, threatening a 50% tariff on countries purchasing Russian oil unless a ceasefire in Ukraine is reached. Curiously, however, Russia and Belarus—central actors in the conflict—were not included in the retaliatory tariffs announced earlier this month.

Markets took note. So did the nations.

The American dollar tumbled. The euro surged to $1.30, shaking investor confidence. U.S. consumers are bearing the brunt of rising costs. The tariffs, intended as leverage, are beginning to resemble self-inflicted wounds.

Yet somewhere between honor and hubris, something shifted.

This is no longer just a war of policy—it’s a war of pride. And ego is proving to be the most expensive currency of all.

Trump famously declared, “This war should have never happened—and it wouldn’t have happened if I were President.” But today, with no ceasefire in Ukraine, no progress in Gaza, no clarity with Iran, and no breakthrough with Putin, those words ring hollow.

Let’s be clear: Iran is not a place for simplistic posturing. The Iranians are masterful negotiators, many holding PhDs in international relations, law, and economic strategy. But beyond academic credentials lies a deeper reality: they are heirs of the Persian Empire, one of the most sophisticated civilizations in history.

From the days of Cyrus the Great to the intricate diplomacy of the Safavid and Qajar dynasties, Persians have wielded power not just with might—but with strategy, patience, and psychological brilliance. They understand time as an ally, not an enemy. They see the West’s rush for resolution as a weakness, not a virtue. In every negotiation, they think in centuries, not election cycles.

You don’t outtalk Iran. You outlast them—if you can.

And China? Xi Jinping isn’t reading The Art of the Deal. He’s studying The Art of War by Sun Tzu—a manual on subtlety, misdirection, and calculated control. Xi doesn’t shout; he waits. He lets the West play a loud, short game while he plays a quiet, long one.

This is not just a political reckoning—it’s a spiritual one.

The Bible warns us: “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” — Proverbs 16:18

This is the moment the Church must rise—not to take political sides, but to take spiritual position. We must step into the role of watchmen, discerning the times, praying with authority, and calling leaders back to humility and wisdom.

Because this war—whether in Gaza, Ukraine, or global markets—will not be won in press rooms or tariff threats.

It will only be turned by divine intervention.

When diplomacy becomes theater, when world leaders are moved more by ego than wisdom, it is the Church that must return to the wall in prayer.

Because if the course ahead is left to ego, the world will fracture.

But if it is turned over to the Lord, we may yet see the kind of breakthrough that only Heaven can orchestrate.

Brilliant article, terrific insights.

I love how she starts with Notre Dame, the reopening ceremony, which really did welcome Trump back just after his election win in November.

Trump at Notre Dame in France, the heart of Europe has tremendous significance on so many levels. I'll only touch on 2-

1--Notre Dame burnt down in France in April 2019 while Trump was still having trouble getting his land deal- his peace plan out. Macron of France kept trying to push it along, and then finally started with his own plans. God intervened. First attempt Macron is sidelined by the Yellow Vests, last attempt sidelined by Notre Dame burning down. That deal came out in Jan 2020 and the world came to a standstill with Covid almost immediately. The deal was shelved and replaced by the toothless, land free Abraham Accords.

Did you happen to see the Restrainer at work in all that? I sure did. God didn't allow Trump OR Macron to jump ahead of HIS timing in allowing things to happen on God's schedule, not Trump, not Macron, not Satan's agenda! GOD and GOD ALONE holds the keys to all the times and seasons. Satan is only allowed the rope that God gives him, to prepare for the end.

2-- Trump AND Notre Dame are BAAACK! Same year, same month!

Notre Dame is the heart of France symbolically, it's also a very Catholic (western leg of Rome remember?) symbol and it's in the heart of the EU which both France and Germany run (they were the last survivors of the ancient Holy Roman Empire via Napoleon and the Kaisers/Hitler and both tried to do the world empire thing). Again that is the western leg of Rome. Trump holds the power right now, via NATO and the Petrodollar, both of which he's dismantling as fast as possible, and Europe is rising again because of the threat of Russia (with Turkey they represent the old eastern leg of Rome)

Did you happen to see the Restrainer at work again? Not allowing Trump his second term till everything is right, the stage is prepped and ready by the left, all ready for the right- because BOTH sides are focused on their form of power.

Did you see how everything centres on Israel? How Trump didn't win his second term till Israel is fighting for it's life again?

How GAZA is the focus of the world? And Israel is the hated one?

What would Daniel make of such an image?

Would it remind him of the time Nebuchadnezzar lost his mind to unbridled pride in his accomplishments, until he acknowledged The ONE TRUE GOD?

Pride does go before destruction. A haughty spirit before a fall.

Joshua was reminded of that in Joshua 5:13-15 here:

13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, “Are You for us or for our adversaries?”

14 So He said, “No, but as Commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.”

And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, “What does my Lord say to His servant?”

15 Then the Commander of the Lord’s army said to Joshua, “Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.” And Joshua did so.

God isn't fighting for us or against us. He fights HIS battles. We fit into HIS plans. HE is our commander. Joshua thought like we often do- God it would sure be great if you'd do this or that so we can win. The point of view Joshua needed and we need, is to remember that GOD is in charge. HIS plans and HIS will are what matter. Prayer gets us to that place of praying for His will, aligning our will to His.

As Adrian reminds us here:
On this I absolutely agree. (y) Man may indeed propose, but God alone will dispose. Therefore as Christians we must be praying. Fervently.

This war requires prayer. It won't be won by anything less. It may not go the way we hope.

It WILL go the way God plans.

Britt Gillette thinks we are actually in a global depression now but the world hasn't realised it yet properly ?

I had not put those events together :thankyou:

Not to mention the restrainer's role with the global economy.

Britt Gillette thinks we are actually in a global depression now but the world hasn't realised it yet properly ?
Britt's got solid reasons for his thoughts, but like everything--

we see stuff happening, but one thing we can't do is predict the future. God's ways of working out His prophetic arrangements may take twists and turns along the way that we had no clue would happen.

Like the things that happened due to Covid. We could reasonably assume that sooner or later a pandemic would hit. We dodged many a bullet over the years- eg that idiot nurse working with Ebola, feeling sick and shopping for her wedding dress anyway, or the SARS outbreak in Toronto. Another idiot nurse working with Ebola in Africa coming home and refusing to stay in quarantine. All in the post 911 period, pre Covid.

What we couldn't predict was the global shutdown in response to Covid. And all the aftershocks from that.

I'm looking at this current storm and focusing on Jesus- His provision, His peace in the midst and just watching it unfold and looking at the puzzle pieces, how they might fit in the half finished jigsaw in front of me.

The past is filled in, the borders are done, those are Bible prophecy.

I've got some semi finished patches in the centre, that I don't know where they'll fit and I keep trying new pieces as those show up. Sometimes I have to tear them out and start over. That's where my probability index comes in on several theories like whether or not America is Babylon (still ranking low on my probability but I'm rechecking my initial reasoning to see if that still holds) or whether or not the Millennial Day theory will still hold (I think it is holding up just great so far)

Keeping in mind that the Restrainer restrains till He is taken out of the way (Rapture) I look at what I think I see Him doing and wonder how that fits.

I remember doing that a lot during the lead up to the Trump Peace Plan. That and the WEF and globalist attempts to crash the economy that didn't end up exploding it.

Britt Gillette fits here- If the Restrainer doesn't restrain, then yes we might be in a serious depression/recession but like Covid, that will result in some end time pieces fitting into their places.

But then as now I always look to the Restrainer, to see if I can spot Him moving because THAT looks like impossible stuff, unexpected stuff showing up. The economic bubble not bursting when it "should" or the Yellow Vest protests in France derailing Macron's attempts to insert himself in the Middle East peace plan that Trump and Kushner were working on with Netanyahu.

Right now what I see are: the way tariffs are reshaping global alliances without exploding anything much yet. The way the left is busy predicting doomsday, the right is predicting victory, but the in between people are still there, the ones who can still think, who aren't taking extremes but looking and thinking. The continued war in Ukraine, long after it should have been settled with tactical nukes on key Ukraine cities. The ongoing war with the Chinese economy that hasn't exploded into Taiwan. The inevitable Jer 49/Ezek 32 war on Elam in Iran- taking out their nukes. That alone should convince anyone of the actions of the Restrainer. And more.

This current economic storm is reminding me of the one during the Nixon years- that ended with Nixon tossing out Bretton Woods and the gold standard, in favour of the Petrodollar, the deals with the Saudis and going to China to warm things up with China.

It's actually looking and feeling to me like bookends of an era of debt, consumerism, all happening in the time where Israel begins, grows, survives several conflicts. My current theory is that the Lord Himself is removing our comfortable ways, allowing us to lean on Him more as uncertainty explodes. Will we rely on our national identity, or our identity in Christ to provide peace and security. Will our bank account give us security, or will Jesus?

We are heading for more uncertain time, less peace and security, and in the increasing storm Jesus is calling His own to keep their eyes on Him, let the storm be the storm, but lean on Him, His provision, His Peace. We are called to give our hope to others, share the gospel so they too can have that peace in the centre of that storm that is raging around us.

My rock solid ways of looking at stuff:
1 how does this fit with Israel ??? - everything revolves around Israel!
2 what is the Restrainer restraining???? What looks IMPOSSIBLE by all logical expectation but is still happening?
3 How does this fit Bible Prophecy or is it shaping up to look like it might? Is this looking like Tribulation stuff or pre trib stuff?

This video by Mentour Pilot (a Finnish pilot flying out of his home base in Spain) who George always watched for all things aviation.

He's actually got the simplest explanation of how tariffs affect modern manufacturing and why this hurts Boeing- an American factory. - YouTube

The problem is the whole Supply Chain we all got to know and endure during Covid. Tariffs affect the supply chain, so even when a factory is based in the States, they buy parts, tools and equipment across the globe. It's worse because of the Just In Time model of not keeping a lot of spare parts in stock. The production line at Boeing depends on parts coming in regularly from all over the world at prices baked into the costs.

This will affect air travel rather quickly- raising ticket prices drastically in order to pay the increased cost to the airline buying a new plane. Even though purchase agreements include a reasonable profit and allowance for troubles, but companies like Boeing who are already in a bit of trouble this will mean that the airlines MUST pay or ignore buying new aircraft.

If Boeing tries to cut costs, then quality and safety take a hit. He explains why building a plane takes years from design to flight. Swapping parts out for what's available means redesign and retesting.

Doors blowing out during flight won't be the only problem for Boeing as the people on the production line attempt to get things done with more and more shortages.

It's a delicate web of interconnecting factories across multiple countries.

This is just one industry. Boeing is a major American factory who are part of the American export economy. But they are also a big part of the American airline industry, supplying a huge amount of the fleet for the different airlines serving the American consumer and abroad for foreign airlines.

Delta Airlines is one of the airlines affected. They have an order from Airbus- a European company. The CEO of Delta declares he won't be paying the tariffs. He will defer any delivery with a tariff on it. So this results in a wait and see approach. - YouTube

That wait and see approach is across the whole economy. The consumers are doing it too. Buy groceries, but wait before buying much else that isn't a necessity. There was a small surge in people buying iPhones before the tariffs came into effect, and that will boost sales this month. Cars too.

But if tariffs continue or remain unstable- changing unpredictably then people will simply stop buying all but essentials. That contracts the economy, that is a recession.

And if enough people and businesses do that- and some businesses will fold under the pressure- then it's a depression.

As businesses downsize or die, they lay people off. I remember this during the Nixon years. Inflation was fierce, people's paycheques didn't keep up. It didn't improve till Reagan (and Reagan was dead against tariffs. He was the one who started the Free Trade Deal with Canada and decided to lower taxes to stimulate his economy- it worked).

Printing money was part of the problem. Nixon faced a bigger money supply than gold to back it up. He cooked up the Petrodollar. Reagan wasn't able to get back onto the gold standard but he did improve the economy to the point that Presidents that came after him, Bush Sr, Clinton and Bush Jr were still spending the windfall and reaping the rewards from a robust economy.

Right now the US dollar is dropping against other currencies because it's worth somewhat less- the oil it's backed with is dropping in value due to recession contracting the economy. Other countries don't want it- they worry about America's ability to stay afloat and the instability of her markets and economy. They have debt of their own to worry about. Biden printed money to get thru Covid as did Trump (stimulus cheques anyone?) and every other leader around the planet. That "stimulated" the economy and kicked the can down the road. But it drove inflation and devalued the dollar in the process. That always leads to a correction- what goes up must come down.

Google's AI says this: "A recession is a slowdown in economic activity, typically defined as two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth, while a depression is a more severe and prolonged recession characterized by a significant decline in GDP and widespread unemployment. In essence, a depression is a deeper, more severe, and longer-lasting economic downturn than a recession"

Looking at just one industry makes it easier to see what's happening and how tariffs are affecting real life decisions within that industry.

There are no simple answers. Just multiplying costs for the producers which are passed onto the consumers who are downsizing their budgets to deal with increasing costs.

The problem is how the debt balloon has been passed on from President to President, getting bigger all the time (this is how John Maynard Keynes's economics model works only he thought the future generation would solve the problem). We've had mini corrections like 2008 but nothing substantial. Covid set this up even worse and all the countries began to print money. Now it's correction time.

I think this is exactly what Klaus Schwab was hoping for when he said, you will own nothing and be happy. I think he was right about creating poverty across the planet, but happy... not so much.

The Great Reset that he wants crashes the system and reduces everyone but the elites to poverty.

IF THE RESTRAINER RESTRAINS till we are taken up then it won't crash this side of the Rapture-- but it is putting tremendous strain on an already debt bloated system due for correction.

Right now, I think The Restrainer is still restraining.

I also think we are getting close to the Rapture if we can see a world wide reset trying to happen.

Watch, pray and spread the gospel.

Jesus is calling His own to keep their eyes on Him, let the storm be the storm, but lean on Him, His provision, His Peace. We are called to give our hope to others, share the gospel so they too can have that peace in the centre of that storm that is raging around us.

We Can have Confidence in God's Word......

"So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it"
Isaiah 55:11

God doesn't expect us to figure out everything. He just wants us to Trust Him and believe that what He has planned will be accomplished,
and for us, His plan is for our glorious eternity with our Lord Jesus, and it's coming. We only need to hold on just a little while and God's Faithful promise for Jesus to come for us WILL COME.

"Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful."

"For yet a little while, And He who is coming will come and will not tarry"
Hebrews 10:23, 37
