The Drill Down: DOGE Going After Welfare Fraud — ‘The Money’s There’

Hol

Well-known
“Elon Musk cited a stat that there’s half a trillion dollars” in fraud going on, McClenahan tells host Eric Eggers. “According to the GAO’s own figures, there’s anywhere from $230 billion to $520 billion in fraudulent payments in [social welfare] programs across the board. So, the money is there if it’s looked at.”

I would love to see Welfare dealt with. Rampant fraud and women purposely getting pregnant to keep the money train going.

During one of our many postal strikes in Canada people had to show up at the welfare offices to get their cheques (back in the 80s).

It ended up cutting a HUGE amount of fraudulent claims. People had to show up, show their real ID, real address etc and go thru a process to claim the cheques.

Oh the horror, oh the nasty govt taking away benefits people had been claiming for dead rellies, non existent persons, or everyone's favourite, multiple cheques to multiple identities at the same address. Multiple personality disorder had it's perks there for a while. Till the strike.

I suspect we have a LOT more fraud now.

With fewer fraudulent claims, there will be time, manpower, and resources for the workers to actually vet the claims for people truly needing help, and help those people claim everything they need and are entitled to.
And there will likely be a need for fewer people working in those offices, and if not, at least they won't be overwhelmed like now (in some places).
So long as they don't close down offices in rural areas just because of numbers.

Maybe they can fix the broken stuff, too. Like the Federal government not taking into account that it costs a single person just as much to rent a one-bedroom apartment as it does for a couple, when Federal poverty guidelines are set (and upon which eligibility for all sorts of programs is based).

Maybe all the money saved can be used to improve mental health programs and access.

When churches cared for the mentally infirm, we may have rescued some (thinking up to late 1800s). Sadly, state run mental health is a pharmaceutical testing ground.

AMA, APA, and APA best practices/standard of care ALL say that use of pharmaceuticals still requires psychotherapy/talk therapy/counseling/etc.
It doesn't happen most of the time in government MH "services" provided to poor, especially homeless. The one exception I know of is the VA.
Besides availability, poor, especially homeless, have a hard time getting to appointments.
Some mental illnesses, notably paranoia, schiziphrenia, and multiple personality disorder, make going off MH meds far more likely than other conditions and illnesses, and far more likely to miss appointments.

Substance abuse makes everything worse.

Right. Their entire strategy is pharmaceutical, and though pills may be the best treatment in few cases initially, it never solves the problem.

Only God’s Word heals a sin wretched mind.
