The Age of Entitlement

The word “entitlement” has become the core of a society that has veered far from the Lord. It denotes the idea that we deserve, and therefore, we should have. If it is something we feel we need, we want it regardless of whether we actually need it or not.

But entitlement is far more that: it’s an attitude that a person is entitled to do or say anything without repercussions or accountability. The "Gay Agenda" is pushed by the LGBTQ+, aimed at forcing society to not only accept, but embrace and even promote their satanic lifestyle, while those who do not want it are silenced and threatened. Lawsuits are often filed over the least of slights, all because the plaintiff felt entitled to sue. Young people feel entitled to rebel against authority and do as they please, while schools feel entitled to push curricula that not only shove the LGBTQ+'s agenda down the throats of the children and parents alike against their wills, but also promote "Diversity, Tolerance and Inclusivity" (DEI), atheism, and the removal of God and the Bible from the educational system. Murderers claim the entitlement of brutally slaying scores of innocent people in the name of any cause, while the survivors and families of the dead are denied any justice. And those in power now seek to force their opponents either into silence or prison, much like Hitler's regime in the 1930's.

Not A New Idea

The idea of entitlement has taken hold on our society and is becoming “the norm” rather than the aberration. But it isn’t unique simply to our times:

"“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone. For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be. Then there will be two men in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one will be left.”" (Matthew 24: 36-41, NASB)

Here, Jesus says that the time before His return will be exactly like the time just before the Flood. Let's take a deeper look into those days:

"Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. The LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. The LORD said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, from man to animals to creeping things and to birds of the sky; for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD." (Genesis 6:5-8, NASB)

Before the Lord, man had decided that he had a right to commit bloodshed, and this attitude spread (with the sole exception of Noah and his immediate family) throughout all the Earth:

"Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence. God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth. Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth." (Genesis 6:11-13, NASB)

Eat, Drink and Act Badly

They were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, and committing violence, and doing what they felt they had a right to do:

"And He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it. They will say to you, ‘Look there! Look here!’ Do not go away, and do not run after them. For just like the lightning, when it flashes out of one part of the sky, shines to the other part of the sky, so will the Son of Man be in His day. But first He must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. It was the same as happened in the days of Lot: they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building; but on the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. It will be just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed." (Luke 17:22-30, NASB)

Same Thought, Different Day
The Lord shows us that the behavior of the people in Sodom and Gomorrah was the same as those on earth before the Flood:

"For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a preacher of righteousness, with seven others, when He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; and if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction by reducing them to ashes, having made them an example to those who would live ungodly lives thereafter; and if He rescued righteous Lot, oppressed by the sensual conduct of unprincipled men (for by what he saw and heard that righteous man, while living among them, felt his righteous soul tormented day after day by their lawless deeds), then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from temptation, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who indulge the flesh in its corrupt desires and despise authority." (2 Peter 2:4-10, NASB)

And this is how Sodom acted:

"Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening as Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground. And he said, “Now behold, my lords, please turn aside into your servant’s house, and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way.” They said however, “No, but we shall spend the night in the square.” Yet he urged them strongly, so they turned aside to him and entered his house; and he prepared a feast for them, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. Before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people from every quarter; and they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may have relations with them.” But Lot went out to them at the doorway, and shut the door behind him, and said, “Please, my brothers, do not act wickedly. Now behold, I have two daughters who have not had relations with man; please let me bring them out to you, and do to them whatever you like; only do nothing to these men, inasmuch as they have come under the shelter of my roof.” But they said, “Stand aside.” Furthermore, they said, “This one came in as an alien, and already he is acting like a judge; now we will treat you worse than them.” So they pressed hard against Lot and came near to break the door. But the men reached out their hands and brought Lot into the house with them, and shut the door. They struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves trying to find the doorway." (Genesis 19:1-11, NASB)

Bad Ideas From The Source OF ALL Bad Ideas
But when it comes down to entitlement, the all-time "winner" is someone who is not even human:
"“How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations! But you said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’" (Isaiah 14:12-14, NASB)

Satan felt he was higher than everything else, and that he was entitled to a place equal to the Lord! To that end, he rebelled against the Lord and recruited 1/3 of the heavenly host to aid him. All he got for trying was a one-way ticket for him and his brood straight out of heaven. After this, Satan jealously felt entitled to wrest control of the earth from mankind, leading to his role in mankind’s fall, and the beginning of entitlement for the human race.

Gimme, Gimme, Gimme
Because sin is the root of entitlement, it afflicts every area and every group, even those who trust in the Lord. We can start thinking that God "owes us something" because we “obey His commands in Scripture”, that "we have been good" or "served Him". But we do not serve the Lord because we want something from Him; rather, He is worthy to be loved, served and worshiped; that said, have we ever thought about what the Lord deserves? Instead of focusing on what we feel "entitled" to, what about what Jesus Christ is entitled to? Because of a certainty, Jesus Christ did not get what he deserved, but got what He didn't deserve:

- To be stripped of His glory by coming to Earth.

- To be born in a lowly stable.

- To be accused of being “a fake”, “casting out demons by Beelzebub”, “a liar”, and a whole host of other lies and slander.

- To be mocked, beaten, scourged horribly and put to death in the most shameful and painful way possible on earth at that time.

- To be lied about and slandered by the Pharisees after His resurrection (claiming his disciples "stole His body").

Neither did He deserve any of the hatred, insults and utter disbelief in the past two millennia since His return to Heaven. He has been reviled, made fun of, accused of being "only a man/myth" and other more obscene suggestions. But Jesus took what we deserved and gave us instead what we did not deserve: grace.

Expected Everything And Still Disappointed
We must realize that since we deserve nothing except the recompense of our sin, that salvation is not a right nor an entitlement, but a gift. And since we have been “purchased” by the Lord, it is not our own wants and will we serve, but His:

"Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body." (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, NASB)

And since we now belong to Him, we are no longer the world’s, nor are we to think or act like them; instead, we are to be transformed by the Holy Spirit and the Word of God:

"Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12:1-2, NASB)

This world is caught in an "Age of Entitlement"; that said, we can be involved in an "Age of Gratitude" where we celebrate the Lord and thank Him for what He has done. The world chases after material things and kills over them; but in God, we have life and hope instead of death and bloodshed.

I bid you all peace.
