Syria's Assad may have perished in plane crash.

Ukrainian intelligence: Russian forces helped Bashar al-Assad escape Damascus.

Earlier reports claimed an Il-76T plane carrying Assad disappeared from radar, sparking speculation about a crash or shootdown.

However, Ukrainian intelligence says this was Russian disinformation to conceal their operation to evacuate Assad and his inner circle.

Russian media from the Kremlin: former Syrian President Bashar Assad and his family members are in Russia. They were granted political asylum for humanitarian reasons.

Bashar al Assad is in Moscow, says Russian state media
Russian state media says fallen Syrian president Bashar al Assad is in Moscow with his family.

Quoting a source in the Kremlin, Russian state media outlet TASS said Mr Assad and his family members have been provided with asylum in the Russian capital.

There had been much speculation over Mr Assad whereabouts after reports he fled Damascus before the rebels arrived there this morning.

I do not think Putin would state so plainly that Assad is in Moscow if he were dead in Syria. However, as @Shinobi says, the current scene is too confusing to state any outcome with certainty. There are reasons Russia would want to keep his death quiet at this time. We'll know soon enough. If Assad is really safe in Russia, we will see video at some point soon.

I wonder how long these rebels will retain control of Syria or whether Russia and co will just lick their wounds and retake it back at a more opportune time ?

Russia doesn't appear to have the military capability to easily take any country. It stems in large part in the way their military recruits are treated. Russia really only has one strength in its military: Nukes, and that remains to be seen because we don't know what percentage of their nukes will actually fly. Hope we never find out...
