Student loan freebies

dwb

Well-known
The administration and the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) reached the agreement Friday in the AFT v. U.S. Department of Education case, resolving months of legal tension over the government’s obligation to cancel student debt for borrowers who have made decades of payments under federal law.

"For nearly a decade, the AFT has fought for the rights of student loan borrowers to be freed from the shackles of unjust debt—and today, a huge part of that affordability fight was vindicated," AFT President Randi Weingarten said. "This year, we took on the Trump administration when it refused to follow the law and denied borrowers the relief they were owed.

The article was vague about the circumstances regarding who and why the debts are being cancelled. I'm sure some may have merit. As someone who took out student loans and paid back every penny, I have problems with my tax dollars being used to pay someone else's debts. Helping the unfortunate is one thing, debt repayment is another. Just as when Biden proposed I think this is a violation of the Constitution. While only borrowing for one year, I paid for the rest as I went. Sometimes skipping multiple semesters due to not having the money. I worked full time during the day and went to school at night. Being newly married with three small children it was a long process, taking eight years to earn a four year degree. That was necessary to be able to earn a better salary that comes with a college education. Higher education was expensive back then too.

By not holding people responsible for their obligations, regardless of what those obligations are, people then begin to feel entitled to special treatment which is going to be a liability in the future. As the world turns to socialism and communism (same thing) we also see the plague of entitlement creeping into society. From no consequences for bad behavior at school, expecting passing grades without performing the work, taking loans without repayment, given jobs without the qualifications, and even no penalty for criminal acts, our civilization is decaying due to the lack of personal responsibility. Call me old fashioned, a boomer, grandpa, whatever, no one will ever convince me that being responsible for your actions and decisions is a bad thing.

student loan borrowers to be freed from the shackles of unjust debt

I've avoided debt all of my life with very little exceptions which applied when for convoluted reasons the debt benefited me significantly. During those exceptions I had the means to pay off the debt immediately otherwise there wouldn't be any exceptions.

I cannot comprehend the phrase "shackles of unjust debt". If a person takes on debt to get an education, the debt is not unjust, and should be paid back like any other loan a person takes on. If a person goes to a loan shark and takes on debt with an absurd amount of interest, it's about the stupidist thing a person can do, but it does create an obligation to meet the criteria in the agreement made with the loan shark.

Not a penny of taxpayer money should go to debt forgiveness. A person who takes out a loan for any person is the responsible party for paying it off, not their neighbor.

me either!

Chances are if you can't pay back the loan because the degree is worthless, then you shoulda got a degree or a diploma in something USEFUL! I think university is sometimes used as an excuse to delay adulthood.

I think the trades should be encouraged rather than the incubation period for idiots that seems to take place at these institutes for higher learning.

Making the idiotic pay back the cost of their incubation might be the first bit of real learning that takes place!

I've benefitted from this. I was on an income contingent repayment plan, that was supposed to cancel the debt if it wasn't paid off by a certain amount of time. I made the payments, which were often less than the interest accrued. If I was making enough, the payments would go up to cover interest and I would send in more to pay down the principle. I got my debt down to around $10,000, when it was cancelled. I would have had it paid off within about a year and a half, at the rate I was paying.

My husband has a PhD. He can't get a job around here in his field (poultry science), even though this is the land of poultry. We've overheard a CEO of one of the big poultry companies laughing about how they won't hire Chinese scientists. Can't prove the racism in court. Hubs is working a minimum wage job so that we can be here to help my family.

We have no other debt but my student loans, but have never been able to put away any money. Both of us come from poor families. Any time we've had money in the bank, something has come up to drain that money. We've given money to pay for hospital bills for family members in China, where, if you don't have the money for the services up front, you can just die on the street. When my mom was laid off, we put our savings toward helping her start her own business, so that she could pay her debts that she and my father accrued, which he dumped on her in the divorce when he cheated on her and left her for another woman. I can't afford to pay her debt, but what little bit we had went into keeping her solvent. I work in her office to help do the office work that she can't do herself. I make no money doing it. I also make our food from scratch, wash/mend/make our clothes, and keep the garden. I also make sure that mom takes her medication on time. I was trading services with a physical therapist from our church. She thinks I need to see a rheumatologist because I have some sort of health problem that lays me up for days at a time. She has been an absolute God send because her help keeps my body functioning.

God be blessed. We rarely have extra, but we always seem to have just enough. I hate that the government forgave my debt, but I am grateful that it was paid off right when I needed to help mom. We have no retirement, no house, our newest car is about 15 years old. It runs and I'm grateful. I don't know what will happen to me when my family dies. I'll have to trust God, because at this rate, I'll probably be on the government dole or homeless.

I'm against some things that I've benefited from but I say if you can get anything from the govmint take it, because if you haven't paid for it many times over you eventually well.

So, good for you!
