SoCal Police to Use Drones to Catch Illegal Fireworks on July 4

Police in fire-ravaged Southern California, plan to use drones to catch people who use illegal fireworks on and around the Fourth of July celebrations.

While many, even in California, might ordinarily balk at the use of drones for surveillance and law enforcement, the fact that recent Los Angeles wildfires could have been sparked by illegal fireworks means that many communities are on edge entering Independence Day week.

The Pasadena Star-News reports:

Revelers who once could illegally ignite fireworks and scatter before police officers arrive or who suffer from collective amnesia when questioned about who lit the fuse may still find themselves lighter in the wallet. For the first time in parts of Southern California, stealthy aerial surveillance will attempt to nab them in the act.

Riverside, Hemet and Brea, and possibly other cities, will launch drones to film illegal activity as municipalities increasingly marry new technology with old-fashioned legislation to prevent injuries and the type of fast-moving fires that devastated the region in January.

Offenders or their landlords will then receive a surprise: Those cities are mailing citations to property owners, in some cases without ever first contacting them, regardless of whether they were present when the fireworks sparkled, smoked or skyrocketed.

I saw this article and had to laugh because the article about Mosquito Drones came to me.
How clever if they used Mosquito Drones to surveil the cities for illegal fireworks since they would just blend in with the regular Summer mosquito population but the bite will be that big fine.

We have dry hills all around us, and about five wildfires burning in our general area.
Hot, strong gusty winds in late afternoons and early evenings.
We have two retired police, one active police, one EMT living non our small cul-de-sac.
They are all planning on shooting of illegal fireworks this weekend, as they always do on and around July 4th.
I'm talking those big, loud rockets.
I certainly hope a drone or two does flyovers in our area................and someone does follow-up on them.

Would love to have police around our neighborhood -- there is an open field behind our house that attracts wackos in pick up trucks with vast supplies of fireworks every 4th. We usually spend the evening on our deck making sure they don't burn down our homes. :tsk:
Too bad water costs so much. I would want to run the hose on the field for 2 days and turn it into a marsh.

There was a fireworks warehouse in No-Cal that massively exploded yesterday, I believe.
Nine people working there who are unaccounted for.........probably blown to smithereens.
Our county (Riverside County) has made fireworks illegal......I'm sure other counties have, too.
But..... why are they not illegal in the whole state??? With all the dry tinder around, the hot weather, and the winds???
Doesn't anyone have any common sense anymore??
And, why don't my neighbors who have been in law enforcement, and responded as an EMT to July 4th incidents, obey
the law??? What makes them think they are above the law??? What makes them think that they have the right to put
their neighbor's homes and lives in danger?? There are other neighbors on surrounding blocks who are doing it, too.
And, of course, there are not enough law enforcement in the area to respond to all the calls for help...........

My neighbor several houses down is a cop and he has been throwing very loud drunken pool parties almost every weekend that go on and on. Some until 4 AM. All of his cop friends are there and there have been about 25 cars parked all on his lawn and on the street. Our ordinance for noise here is 10 pm. I understand they have a very stressful job and need to burn off steam but this is ridiculous. The only good thing I can say about it is that he apparently has them stay over rather than drive drunk.

Two of the police officers are father(retired/active(son) regularly smoke pot with friends in backyard...... right next door to us. The father waits until after 10pm (sometimes 1am-3am) to rollout his trash to the curb.
Right by my bedroom wall.....waking me up. Then after the pickup the next day he waits until the wee hours to wheel them back. So two nights a week he ruins my sleep! At 80 I need my sleep!!!
