Rescue efforts underway after US military refueling plane goes down in Iraq during Operation Epic Fury

A United States military refueling plane has gone down in western Iraq during the US-Israel conflict with Iran.

An official who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity said at least five crew members were aboard.

Rescue efforts are underway, a spokesperson for the US military said Thursday.

The aircraft was part of the US military operation against Iran, but the crash was not due to hostile or friendly fire, it said, but it was not immediately clear if there were any casualties.

All six crew members onboard a U.S. military refueling aircraft died when the plane crashed in western Iraq on Thursday afternoon, U.S. Central Command (Centcom) confirmed Friday.

“The circumstances of the incident are under investigation. However, the loss of the aircraft was not due to hostile fire or friendly fire,” Centcom posted on the social platform X early Friday morning.

Centcom updated the number of those confirmed killed in the crash from four following a search for two service members.

The command noted that the identities of the fallen would not be shared until 24 hours after notifying next of kin.
