The administration of Spanish socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is expecting to receive as many as 750,000 applications from illegal migrants seeking to become beneficiaries of Sánchez’s mass amnesty plans, the newspaper El País reported on Thursday.

The Spanish government is presently working towards finalizing a decree announced by Sánchez in January that, once implemented will grant legal residence permits to 500,000 illegal migrants in Spain — requesting only that they comply with a list of notably lax requirements.

Despite a fierce rejection from Spanish nationals and the nation’s Congress, Sánchez intends to implement the highly controversial plan through a Royal Decree, which allows him to bypass parliamentary approval requirements for its execution.

Europe Migration Chief: Spain’s Mass Amnesty Could Lead to E.U. Closing Internal Borders

Brussels fears Spain’s mass amnesty for illegal migrants may prompt an E.U. member state to shutter its borders, European Commissioner for Asylum and Migration Magnus Brunner declared Wednesday.

Brunner delivered the his remarks at “Wake Up, Spain! Wake Up, Europe! ‘Growth, Cohesion, and Uncertainty,'” an ongoing symposium hosted by the digital newspaper El Español and others in Madrid between April 13 – 17.

The commissioner addressed the fragility of the Schengen free movement zone and pointed out that ineffective management of irregular migration erodes trust among Member States, which could trigger the reintroduction of internal border controls and “jeopardize the very essence of European freedom of movement.”

“If irregular immigration is not properly managed, internal borders will be closed,” Brunner said, per El Español.

Poll: 80% of Spanish Youth Opposes Mass Amnesty for Illegal Migrants

A survey in Spain found some 80.5 percent of individuals aged 17 – 25 reject the socialist government’s mass amnesty plans for half a million illegal migrants, the digital newspaper El Españolreported on Sunday.

The survey was conducted by the polling and research firm SocioMétrica for El Español between April 15 and 18 — the same week that the socialist government led by Prime Minster Pedro Sánchez began its mass amnesty process to benefit 500,000 illegal migrants in Spain with legal residence and work permits.

The Spanish government launched the highly criticized amnesty process despite a fierce rejection from the nation’s population and parliament.
