well I'm sure the news media is full of "Trudeau Resigned" this morning but here's the deal.
He prorogued (suspended) Parliament for the longest time he possibly could. That is March 24th. He has NOT actually resigned. He has started the process for his party to find a new leader, he is still PM of Canada till after the next election and that will be a while. HE SIMPLY ANNOUNCED HE INTENDS TO RESIGN and is starting a leadership convention in his own party.
YUP he's still the leader until HIS party the Liberals can figure out a successor. He could still stay on
The bad news is:
1 Parliament is suspended till Mar 24th. This is 2 months after Trump takes power, and 2 months after the 25% tariffs take effect.
2 He's still in charge till then, but with even less incentive to do right by Canada. He is one of the laziest, if not the laziest, most ineffective leaders we have ever had. The dog eats his homework all the time- now he will take it out on us for not loving him. That is his pattern with people in his govt that turn on him, or people that see thru him and demand performance.
3 Combine the above 2 problems and you've got a lazy entitled narcissist angry at the voters, his own Liberal party and he's got even LESS incentive to do something effective about the conditions that got Trump to announce the tariffs. In fact his usual nature is to get back at his "enemies" so he is MORE likely to try and create a HUGE mess for Pierre Poilievre (who will win the next election with a wide margin, whenever we get around to calling an election).
And he has 2 solid months plus a bit to poison things to ensure Canada takes the worst hit possible from the tariffs.
4 Even though we will call an election in late March, that may not be enough time for the Liberals to choose a new leader, so that can also delay matters.
So some good, some bad and Canada is likely to take a serious hit to our economy as a direct result of Trudeau's actions even now. We can't ask Trump to hold off till our parliamentary process has time to work thru at our usual snail's pace, so there will be a very serious time for quite a while until a new govt can be formed after the election and they can deal with the drugs, open borders, and import of terrorism that Trudeau has favoured for the last decade.
