Polar vortex headed for US will bring ‘exceptionally cold’ temps in the new year:

January is shaping up to be the coldest in a decade as the polar vortex dips south across the eastern half of the United States — shocking a nation that has enjoyed an unusually balmy end of the year.
“It’s going to get cold, and then very cold,” a Fox Weather meteorologist told The Post Monday.

“Based on the latest long-range data, this January has the potential to be the coldest since 2014,” they added.

Temperatures are expected to begin dropping from the Rocky Mountains to the East Coast around Thursday, but the real plunge will set in sometime between seven and 14 days from now.

The plunge will bring wind chills across the Midwest dipping below zero, “exceptionally cold” temperatures down to 20 degrees below average in some places, and freezing conditions setting in as far south as the Gulf coast and even into Florida — though it is still too early to forecast exact temperatures.

Old Crow in the Yukon hit -40C which is exactly the same in F. Today it's the coldest spot in Canada.

Actually a bit on the warm side for them for this time of year, but it's finally dropping into the more normal temps for the area. The usual arctic weather hasn't hit Whitehorse Yukon where my step mother and step sister and brother live. They've been unseasonably warm all fall and winter.

Mittens allow your fingers to help keep each other warm and more air (that warms up) is trapped inside a mitten so a mitten is much better than a glove for keeping a hand warm. In a mitten, only the poor lonely thumb is left to fend for itself.

Except trigger mittens.

This is why warm sox, especially wool, are given to homeless in very cold climates. Far cheaper, can layer, etc.

I thought mittens were socks for kittens*maisey*
Seriously though I DO NOT like cold weather. To me that is temperatures 40F and below. I don’t like having to freeze proof pipes, etc…

They are talking the possibility of single digits here and that is rare for us. When I worked for the power company in Jacksonville, our winter no work temperature was 16degF. I actually only experienced that once, it actually got down to 7degF. That was a record low for us.

We showed up to work and couldn’t get the bulldozer or backhoe to start even using ether. Our firewood was so frozen we couldn’t get a fire going so we got back in the truck and twenty minutes later JEA recalled all crews to shut down and come back to the shop. I’m thinking that was in 84.

The next time I saw temps that low I was working in Georgia and it was the day the Space Shuttle blew up on launch. It was like 16degF in Georgia and it was 28 in Cape Canaveral. NASA engineers had warned them not to launch in freezing weather, they didn’t listen.

I was coming back from the Sinai that day. When the pilot said we were diverting north due to aviation traffic and to close the shades on one side of the plane, of course we ALL went over to that side of the plane and raised the shades (charter flight)

I think both my gloves and mittens are the gordini brand. Both are filled with down.

Down-filled, water and wind-proof, with a good gauntlet . . .

I think mine are North Face, but they've been in storage so long I've forgotten :( I bought them when I was a teenager, and when I stored them seven years ago, they were still good :) Climate controlled, so no reason for them to be any different when I get storage unloaded and unpacked.

Polar Vortex Forecast Gets Worse as Meteorologists Sound Alarm

Meteorologists are raising alarms over worsening polar vortex conditions that could bring extreme cold and widespread disruptions.

Why It Matters

So far, this winter has seen one of the warmest Decembers on record in much of the northern United States. Though many residents experienced snow around the holidays, snow coverage was still at or near 20-year lows.

However, the polar vortex could bring severe weather conditions, including heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures, that could affect travel conditions or prompt school closures.

I need to get out into that vortex and sweep the white powder off the decks along with accumulated dust and windborne filth. Fresh powder isn't just great for skiing. It can be used to clean off decks and deck furniture too.

Afterwards I will care on watching my Fireplace YouTube video complete with warm crackly sounds. I might turn on my flicker candles and get cosy with a mug of hot coffee and wrap up in a cosy sweater.
