Polar vortex headed for US will bring ‘exceptionally cold’ temps in the new year:

January is shaping up to be the coldest in a decade as the polar vortex dips south across the eastern half of the United States — shocking a nation that has enjoyed an unusually balmy end of the year.
“It’s going to get cold, and then very cold,” a Fox Weather meteorologist told The Post Monday.

“Based on the latest long-range data, this January has the potential to be the coldest since 2014,” they added.

Temperatures are expected to begin dropping from the Rocky Mountains to the East Coast around Thursday, but the real plunge will set in sometime between seven and 14 days from now.

The plunge will bring wind chills across the Midwest dipping below zero, “exceptionally cold” temperatures down to 20 degrees below average in some places, and freezing conditions setting in as far south as the Gulf coast and even into Florida — though it is still too early to forecast exact temperatures.

Looks like the cooling starts here tomorrow night (New Year's Eve). No sub-zero temps in the 10-day forecast (yet), although a couple nights are single digits.

Hopefully, the cold will force my sibling someplace warm and safe where we can locate.

Again, this is proof that as a Major in the Air Force, you were use to others packing for you….:)

Marines would have a checklist for every contingency!

Yep, you're right. Before my surgery I thought about getting some things down from the heights where they're currently stored, but the whether was so nice I just didn't get around to it. In the Air Force, I was worldwide deployable with little notice so we had to keep our bags packed. It took 2 A3 bags, a helmet bag, and a document suitcase to carry everything required... except that was for no notice checks. When I actually deployed I left some of that "required" stuff at home.

Cant your wife get the things you need?

I don't want to ask her to. You've got to climb up a stepladder, reach up for bins that probably weigh 20 to 25 pounds, them climb down the ladder with a bulky bin. Even when I've got no restrictions it's a little tricky.

If I can get a taller ladder in from the garage I might be able to safely root around in the bins to try and find my extra warm down mittens. That's the only thing I can't do without when it gets real cold.

What kind of down gloves?

We may see a re-emergence of TT's Eyecicles.

I wear neoprene mittens lined with microfleece for winter paddling, beats gloves any time.

Leaving the indoor range on Sunday, all the clothing in the store was 50% off after Christmas sale. I snagged a heavy down jacket, and it looks like it will get put to good use here shortly. Weather channels on the youtube last night were saying we may even get some real snow in another week or so. Meanwhile, getting up to 70° today, digging it while it lasts!

I think both my gloves and mittens are the gordini brand. Both are filled with down.
I thought mittens were socks for kittens*maisey*
Seriously though I DO NOT like cold weather. To me that is temperatures 40F and below. I don’t like having to freeze proof pipes, etc…

They are talking the possibility of single digits here and that is rare for us. When I worked for the power company in Jacksonville, our winter no work temperature was 16degF. I actually only experienced that once, it actually got down to 7degF. That was a record low for us.

We showed up to work and couldn’t get the bulldozer or backhoe to start even using ether. Our firewood was so frozen we couldn’t get a fire going so we got back in the truck and twenty minutes later JEA recalled all crews to shut down and come back to the shop. I’m thinking that was in 84.

The next time I saw temps that low I was working in Georgia and it was the day the Space Shuttle blew up on launch. It was like 16degF in Georgia and it was 28 in Cape Canaveral. NASA engineers had warned them not to launch in freezing weather, they didn’t listen.

I've tried my best and even wanted to see how long I could go before posting to a text or forum with my patented, 'I hate winter" comment! But, this new weather pattern has me thinking, saying, and typing/texting it. I think there was actually a year when I was able to get to late January or early February.

my favourite local weather guy says it's going to be chillier than usual here too, to make up for the weird warmth the last 2 months. It usually drops in Jan especially hard if there is a warmer than normal Nov and Dec.

Global warming gets pretty chilly at times.
