Ottawa to appeal Cowichan Tribes v Canada ruling

Hol

Well-known
The B.C. Supreme Court granted the Cowichan Nation Aboriginal title to approximately 7.5 square kilometers of land in the city of Richmond.

The federal government is appealing a B.C. Supreme Court decision granting land title rights in Richmond, B.C., to a First Nation based on historical ownership.

On August 7, Justice Barbara Young granted the Cowichan Nation title claim to about 7.5 square kilometers of land that encompasses federal and municipal properties.

University of Saskatchewan law professor Dwight Newman states the case creates legal uncertainty for B.C. property rights. He previously told the Epoch Times that future litigation could occur due to overlapping Indigenous and private interests, particularly for urban, waterfront, rural, and resource-rich properties.

Most land in B.C. lacks a formal treaty with Indigenous peoples.

Liberal MP wants to open Canada Day celebrations with Indigneous ‘sacred fires’

A petition backed by Liberal MP Karina Gould suggests that Canada Day celebrations across the country should begin with Indigenous “sacred fires or [an]other appropriate ceremony.” This aligns with a federal report recommending that July 1 'Canada Day' observances "adapt to emerging needs and social expectations."

Petition E-6690 noted that Canada Day celebrations rarely feature Indigenous ceremonies like tobacco offerings, sacred fires, or elder-led openings, adding that “Public visibility of Indigenous protocols educates Canadians and honours treaty obligations.” It urged federal agencies to “issue national guidance” for Canada Day celebrations, as reported by Blacklock’s.

The petition preamble states that the ceremonies affirm “nation-to-nation relationships and advance the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.”

More like Indigenous “Strange Fire”.

More like Indigenous “Strange Fire”.
Exactly.

It’s the libs virtue signaling and in my experience tribes do not end up any better off when the government helps them. I’ve participated in treaty law suits. The US treaties with natives were horrible, and we proved that with one in court.

That led a large corporation with deep pockets to lavish so much money on the tribe. That led to a majority of recipients to deeper drug ties. Some got good scholarships and were able to use their money wisely, but overall things nearly always get worse. We can’t go back 100-yrs to the romanticized days of teepee dwelling and living off the land.
