New York Judge Gregory Carro has set an early June trial date for the state case against Luigi Mangione, the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in 2024.
Carro said the federal government had reneged on its agreement to let the state trial go first but that he would ultimately set an earlier trial date anyway, for June 8.
He made the announcement at an unexpected hearing on Friday, at which Mangione, his lawyers and prosecutors were all present.
…
One of Mangione’s lawyers, Karen Agnifilo, said her client was being put in an “untenable situation” and described the court’s back-and-forth over whether the state or federal case should proceed first as a “tug of war.”
She said she opposed trying the state case while the federal case is also ongoing. Manhattan prosecutors have been pushing for a speedy trial in hopes of trying Mangione before federal prosecutors get the chance.
