It's Harris/Walz

Now the fun begins here. The way this is worded, IDK if Governor Walz has to resign to run, or only to take office.

Succession in Minnesota is stupid. It used to be good, until they made the Governor and Lieutenant Governor a ticket. Historically, having different party executives kept stuff down to a dull roar, improved common sense, and reduced waste (in Minnesota, anyway).

Here are the messy details:

Odds aren’t zero that DFLers Peggy Flanagan, Bobby Joe Champion make history alongside Walz

Gov. Tim Walz’s name is still high on lists of Harris running mate contenders, so here’s what it would mean for state government.
by Peter Callaghan 07/30/2024

"The state constitution is clear: Should Walz resign in the midst of his second term to assume the vice presidency, Flanagan would become governor and fill out the rest of his term.
In turn, President of the Senate Bobby Joe Champion would become lieutenant governor.
In an interview Friday, Flanagan noted that there are several Democratic governors being considered but added, “I might be a little biased as to who I think the best pick would be.”
Has she thought about becoming the first female governor of Minnesota and the first female Native American governor of any state?
“I think Gov. Walz would be honored to be selected to be the vice president and I have been honored this entire time to serve the people of Minnesota. That would not change,” she said."

"Earlier in the week Champion, the Minneapolis DFLer who was elected by the DFL-controlled Senate to be the presiding officer, took a similar stance as Flanagan — giddiness disguised as modesty. If the dominoes fall his way, he would be the state’s first Black lieutenant governor and highest ranking African American in the executive branch."

"But couldn’t his advancement lead to a deadlocked state Senate? Even if the DFL holds the seat in a special election to replace Sen. Kelly Morrison who is running for Congress, a Champion resignation would leave the Senate in a 33-33 tie."

Gov. Tim Walz is Kamala Harris’ running mate. What happens now in Minnesota politics?

Nice home-town kind of article about Governor Walz:

Harris cites Walz’s experience as governor, coach, teacher, veteran in picking him as her running mate

“He knows Washington and the states,” one expert observed as Walz beat out other candidates for the VP spot.
by Ana Radelat 7 hours ago

"WASHINGTON – Vice President Kamala Harris announced Tuesday that she has chosen Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, picking the two-term governor over a handful of other candidates in her campaign to beat Donald Trump.
The Harris campaign initially announced the pick in a text to supporters. “Tim is a battle-tested leader who has an incredible track record of getting things done for Minnesota families,” it said.
In a formal announcement issued later in the morning, Harris said: “I am proud to announce that I’ve asked Governor Tim Walz to be my running mate. One of the things that stood out to me about Tim is how his convictions on fighting for middle class families run deep. It’s personal. As a governor, a coach, a teacher, and a veteran, he’s delivered for working families like his own. We are going to build a great partnership. We start out as underdogs but I believe together, we can win this election.”"

"Harris was searching for a vice president who could be a governing partner and has executive experience and would bring demographic balance to the first major party ticket that will be headed by a woman of color.
Walz fit the bill.
But he also has other strengths. He represented a red district in southern Minnesota in Congress for a dozen years and did so, colleagues say, by the strength of personality and willingness to consider the concerns of conservative and moderate constituents when he cast his votes.
“The entire country is about to see why their friends from Minnesota can’t stop bragging about Governor Walz,” DFL Party Chair Ken Martin said in a statement. “By picking a servant leader born and raised in a small town who has dedicated his career to protecting freedoms and lifting up working families, Vice President Harris has chosen the perfect foil for JD Vance and his politics of resentment.” "

One thing Governor Walz adds to the ticket is personal likeability.

More about Governor Walz from national perspectives (reported locally)

‘Favorite uncle’ vibes, straight talk and Midwestern grit: see what the national influencers pushing Walz for VP are saying

Despite auditioning hard for the role, geography and name recognition remain liabilities for the governor.
by Ana Radelat 07/31/2024

"So far, there’s been little criticism from Democratic powerbrokers about a Walz candidacy, but the governor does have drawbacks in a competition that includes Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear and other Democratic officeholders.
A game changer for Walz, one that helped propel him into the spotlight, was his denigration of Donald Trump and GOP vice presidential candidate Sen. JD Vance of Ohio as “weird,” a characterization embraced by the Harris campaign that has frustrated the Trump campaign and GOP.
But now, there’s a deeper look at Walz, and many like what they see.
In a post on X, former Rep. Beto O’Rourke of Texas, who served on the U.S. House Veterans Committee when Walz was the top Democrat on the panel, called Minnesota’s governor “the real deal.”
“High school teacher, football coach, command sergeant major in the Guard… and he just led the progressive miracle in Minnesota: codified abortion rights, restored voting rights, $1b in affordable housing & strong labor victories. And the guy can go on offense,” O’Rourke said.

19 Facts About Tim Walz, Harris’s Pick for Vice President

Mr. Walz, the governor of Minnesota, worked as a high school social studies teacher and football coach, served in the Army National Guard and chooses Diet Mountain Dew over alcohol.
Aug. 6, 2024Updated 4:18 p.m. ET

"1. He is a (very recent) social media darling. Mr. Walz has enjoyed a groundswell of support online from users commenting on his Midwestern “dad vibes” and appealing ordinariness.

2. He started the whole “weird” thing. It was Mr. Walz who labeled former President Donald J. Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, “weird” on cable television just a couple of weeks ago. The description soon became a Democratic talking point.

3. He named a highway after Prince and signed the bill in purple ink. “I think we can lay to rest that this is the coolest bill signing we’ll ever do,” he said as he put his name on legislation declaring a stretch of Highway 5 the “Prince Rogers Nelson Memorial Highway” after the musician who had lived in Minnesota."

"17. He is a Lutheran. More specifically, he sometimes describes himself as a “Minnesota Lutheran.” “Because we’re good Minnesota Lutherans, we have a rule: if you do something good and talk about it, it no longer counts,” Walz joked during a speech last spring. “So what you have to do is to get someone else to talk about you.”

18. He doesn’t drink after a D.W.I. in 1995. Mr. Walz has said he stopped drinking alcohol after he was pulled over for speeding in 1995 and failed a sobriety test. His wife told him at the time: “You have obligations to people. You can’t make dumb choices.”

19. He also does not drink coffee. He prefers Diet Mountain Dew. As does his Republican counterpart."

Well I never thought much of Humphrey or Mondale. Wonder if Walz could break that streak?

Definitely more liberal than either Humphrey and Mondale.
He's more liberal than Senator Wellstone (D-MN) was, who was the most liberal member of the US Senate when he was there.

He's extremely personable, and for people, who vote on that sort of thing instead of issues, records, etc., he's going to bring votes.

The local news portrays the anti-Bible stuff he's championed in a positive light because that's the way it is here.

I wonder if the (at least temporarily) deadlocked State Senate here will slow the money hemorrhage here, at least for awhile.

At least his church membership aligns with his political beliefs (extremely liberal ELCA), unlike President Biden, Nancy Pelosi, etc.
He will probably help bring muslim votes, even though the party platform doesn't align with their religious beliefs.

Five faith facts about Harris pick Tim Walz, a ‘Minnesota Lutheran’ Dad

He has advocated for the Minnesota Muslim population

"Minnesota is home to a significant and influential Muslim population that Walz has interacted with on numerous occasions. Somalis, more of whom live in Minnesota than any other state, are primarily Muslim — including Rep. Ilhan Omar, one of only three Muslim members of the current U.S. Congress. The first-ever Muslim to serve in Congress is also a Minnesotan: Ellison was a U.S. representative before becoming Minnesota’s attorney general.

Walz, for his part, has regularly attended iftar dinners and Eid al-Fitr celebrations, welcomed a Muslim delegation with a speech during a Muslim Day at the Capitol in 2019, visited Muslim communities that have been victimized by vandalism and spoken at events hosted by local chapters of the Council on American-Islamic Relations and others geared toward pushing back against Islamophobia."

Tim Walz Has Long History of Discriminating Against Christians

Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz has faced multiple lawsuits for allegedly infringing on religious liberty during his time as Minnesota governor.

Walz encountered legal challenges for lockdown policies that religious organizations argued were discriminatory, placing stricter requirements on churches than businesses. He also encountered pushback after signing a law that stripped faith-based schools of funding for a program that offers free college credits to high school students.

Walz determined in a May 13, 2020, executive order that retailers would be allowed to reopen at 50% capacity, but left religious gatherings capped at ten people. After Catholic and Lutheran churches in the state announced plans to resume meeting in-person regardless of the governor’s order, he negotiated to allow religious groups to operate at 25% capacity, according to the Star Tribune.

Two churches nevertheless moved forward with their lawsuit over discriminatory treatment. Walz settled in May 2021 after the state’s motion to dismiss was denied, agreeing to treat religious gatherings the same as “the least restricted secular business regulated by the order.”

Between Harris and Walz there is plenty of ammo for conservatives to work with, both are super liberal, Walz let BLM burn cities and did not stop it, many businesses owned by people of color lost everything, think they will be voting for this super duo, I have doubts, Harris lets the guilty go free and raise $$ for them, they are both far far left .

Funny that she picked an old white guy.” Some of the press is touting him as pro-Israel.
I wonder if they (stupidly) think they could get some independent and even Republican votes with him.

She's probably more concerned about losing DFL votes than adding votes.
Without an older White man on the ticket, there are still some people that wouldn't vote for her on the basis of her gender and/or race, and possibly the perception of insufficient experience on the ticket.

And maybe she was concerned about terrorism, including possible assassination attempts on either or both ticket members, if she had picked Governor Shapiro. The public muslim/hamas-sympathizer/anti-semitic/anti-Israel fall-out over the trial balloon, alone, was horrible. I hate to think about what was conveyed to her behind closed doors :fear:

If Governor Shapiro was her first choice, I think not picking who she really wanted may show show a lack of intestinal fortitude. Having Governor Shapiro on the ticket might have cost her some DFL votes, but they would have been more than made up for by the votes she would have siphoned from President Trump, especially after his bone-headed choice. Plus Pennsylvania has a lot more electoral votes, and Governor Shapiro would likely have carried it.

AFAIK, Governor Walz isn't as closely tied to President Obama as Governor Shapiro.

She could have done far worse :yikes:

I'm trying again:

My denomination was one of the two, which originally sued and thumbed noses at the unfair treatment :) :big grin;
Governor Walz did back down within 24 hours, but the differential between 25 and 50 percent was what propelled the continuing legal action.

Governor Walz is the one that forced Minneapolis to take the National Guard to stop the destruction after Michael Floyd. The Minneapolis Mayor repeatedly refused offers of the National Guard. The churches are what made the biggest difference in the communities after Michael Floyd. The churches and various Christian ministries were already heavily involved in the communities, and still are.

Governor Walz used the State $17B budget surplus on some things that made sense, but more for a LOT of progressive stuff like murdering babies, mutilating children, truncating parental rights, mutilating women and girls, shoving sharia-related domestic violence under the carpet. Because of the anti-Bible policies and laws enacted in Minnesota under his watch, Minnesota is now the abortion, transgender/homosexual, FGM medical "care," etc. mecca of the midwest (aka murder, mayhem, and mysogeny). It's draining the state of resources the citizens and businesses paid for and is overwhelming the medical system. Women, in particular, are having a hard time getting even routine female care. Under Governor Walz’ watch, the State Attorney General’s Office, NGOs, State Cannabis Commissioner, etc. engaged in wrong-doing.

The media touts Governor Walz' work on affordable housing, but most of it went to refugees and illegal/undocumented aliens/migrants. There are still a LOT of homeless and at-risk-of-being-homeless Veterans here. The shelter system is abominable. Most of it uses the harm reduction/less-harm model, which enables drug users and prostitutes, creates new drug users and prostitutes, and makes drug dealers and pimps rich. The shelters are unhealthy, unsafe places, especially for women, children, and mentally ill. Under Governor Walz, the mental health and legal systems were changed so families can't get help for loved ones, who are sick, and even mental health and healthcare providers are often blocked. As far as I am concerned, Governor Walz, the mental health system, shelter system, and Hennepin County (including the Sheriff's Office) are responsible for my mentally ill sibling ending up on the street and consequently losing almost all possessions, losing the lower part of one leg, losing all the toes on the opposite foot, on drugs, and mixed up in Wicca. This last one is the worst, as the consequences are eternal  :apost: :ban:

For anyone, who is wondering:

I was trying to be nice for the first 24 hours after the announcement, especially since Governor Walz says he's a Christian, and is therefore a brother in Christ (only God knows who is and who isn't, so I always give grace in this). I put up the local "Minnesota Nice" articles because I'm so tired of BIGMedia sensationalism, negativity, lies, twisting, spinning, etc. Local media coverage about events and leaders often has nuances about the culture, and "inconsequential" or "inconvenient" facts that are "conveniently omitted" from the national media. This is often true of local media in most places, and I appreciate it when others post about events in their area using local media. The agendas being pushed by TPTB and BIGMedia end up distorting everything, especially when they lie and get away with it because people outside of the immediate area don’t know differently, and the local people that know almost never have any power to get things corrected

He also told the Minnesota National guard to stand down during the riots, he told the police to "take a knee", and he worked to have all of the rioters who did get arrested freed.

To me that is a lot more weird than what the conservative media (such as it is) has been focusing on: The fact that he instituted a law to have tampons placed in boys highschool bathrooms.

This is from Breitbart:

Below are seven things to know about Waltz’s record:
  1. A June report from Minnesota’s legislative auditor found that Walz’s administration “failed miserably in its duty to properly oversee millions of federal dollars it administered to nonprofits to feed children.” The report said that Walz’s alleged incompetence “created opportunities for fraud.” Axios reported: “The report highlighted several ways in which the Walz administration failed to rein in the fraud, undercutting the governor’s longstanding claims that his agency staff deserve credit, not criticism, for their efforts to catch and stop it.”
  2. Walz signed legislation to allow minors to get sex-change operations in Minnesota. He signed a bill to require schools to stock period products in boys’ bathrooms.
  3. Walz allegedly failed to anticipate and react to riots in Minneapolis after the death of George Floyd. Even the liberal mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, slammed Walz’s response to the riots.
  4. Under Walz’s leadership, Minnesota gives free college tuition to illegal immigrants.
  5. Walz signed a bill into law that will give driver’s licenses to potentially 77,000 eligible illegal aliens.
  6. Walz openly championed socialism last week during a “White Dudes” for Harris event.
  7. Waltz was also a radical member of the House of Representatives, with Heritage Action giving him a lifetime score of 13 percent

It's all about transgenders and perverts. Where would a biological woman (XX), who identifies as a man, but who is not yet taking hormones, hasn't been taking them very long, and/or not yet been mutilated, get a tampon if she's using the men's (XY) room?

This state if full of this kind of nonsense.

Although it is nice to walk into the ladies' room at the public library and see there are free tampons and pads for the younger women (XX). Homeless use libraries for so many things and don't have money for a lot of things that are considered essentials in modern times. And sometimes, stuff happens, so very useful for every woman, not just homeless.

There was a lawsuit claiming discrimination because there was TP, but no feminine hygiene products, in the restrooms, and both were basic necessities. So now, the libraries and a lot of other public government facilities have such in the ladies' rooms. No idea if the same exists in the men's (XY) rooms.

It’s weird to me that of all places for the hub to be of the craziness, Minnesota?? I would expect Boston, NYC or San Francisco, not random Minnesota. I must be missing something about Minnesota that makes it a magnet for muslims and perverts.

I think Obama targeted the state with Muslims he was bringing into the country in large numbers.
