Israeli athletes receive death threats ahead of Paris Olympics

In the most secured Olympics so far, Israeli athletes receive invitations to their own funerals in Paris: 'You will die on July 27'; Shin Bet sends comprehensive security detail to secure Israeli athletes

On Saturday, the Israeli team's flag bearer at the opening ceremony, judoka Peter Paltchik, and swimmer Meiron Cheruti received an email with an "invitation" to their own funerals, accompanied by threatening messages, just before they landed in Paris. "You are welcome to attend the funeral of Meiron Amir Cheruti, born on 19/10/1997, died on 27/07/2024," read the daunting message, sent along with a location of the "funeral."

The trend of death threats to Israeli athletes has been going on for some time, with additional athletes receiving threatening messages before they arrive in Paris to participate in the Olympics. After security checks, it was confirmed that these messages were sent by bots and not from an organized group or team threatening the members of the Israeli delegation. Another message read: "The fate of the Zionists will be like that of the Palestinians in Gaza if the Zionists continue to terrorize everyone."

Additional messages threatened to "recreate" the horrors of the 1972 Munich Olympics if the Israeli delegation arrived in Paris. "Be prepared for impact at any moment, at the airport, in the hotel, and on the street. Even the wave of arrests against members of our organization will not prevent us from carrying out our plans, nor will it save you. Prepare for an intifada."

France to give 24-hour protection to Israeli Olympics team due to Gaza war
Israeli athletes will receive 24-hour protection during the Paris Olympics, France's interior minister said, after a far-left lawmaker said Israel's delegation was not welcome and called for protests against their participation. The Games begin on Friday amid pronounced security concerns at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions over the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. Israel's war against Hamas has become a lightning rod among France's far left, with some critics accusing pro-Palestinian members of antisemitism. French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said in a TV interview on Sunday evening that Israeli athletes would be protected around the clock during the Games, 52 years after the Munich Olympics massacre in which 11 Israelis were killed by Palestinian militants. Darmanin spoke after far-left France Unbowed (LFI) party lawmaker Thomas Portes was filmed saying Israel's Olympic athletes were not welcome in France, and that there should be protests against their taking part in the Games.

I keep thinking about the Munich games! The situation is worse now than it was then. I hope their protection is up for it and that Israel has some backup plans in place.

Despite threats, Israeli Olympic delegation travels to Paris with heads held high, backed by entire nation

Most of Israel’s 88-member Olympic team departed on a flight for Paris, France on Monday afternoon, where the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics will begin on Friday.

Ahead of the Monday flight, the president of the Olympic Committee of Israel, Yael Arad, spoke at a press conference at Ben-Gurion International Airport, stressing that Israeli team is about to embark upon something more than a sports mission.

“We feel like emissaries of the State of Israel – our athletes, every one of them are here to achieve their dreams, but there is another layer, of a national mission,” Arad said, adding that while she hoped the delegation would return with medals, winning medals is no longer the main purpose.

“Our first victory is that we’re here, that we didn’t give up, that since October 7 we’ve taken part in hundreds of competitions… What is leading us is the flag of Israel,” Arad said. “In our internal, secret drawer, every one of us is taking all the strength of the Israeli people. We’re bringing with us the hostages, the fallen, the families, everything surrounding October 7 will be with us in our hearts.”
