Hacker group Predatory Sparrows on Thursday made good on its threat a day earlier to publish the source code for Iran’s Nobitex cryptocurrency exchange.

The group, which often goes by its Farsi name, Gonjeshke Darande, accused Nobitex of being “at the heart of the regime’s efforts to finance terror worldwide, as well as being the regime’s favorite sanctions violation tool.”

“Time’s up – full source code linked below. ASSETS LEFT IN NOBITEX ARE NOW ENTIRELY OUT IN THE OPEN” the group, posted on its X account on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the group, thought to be linked to Israel, gave Nobitex exchange users 24 hours to withdraw assets. It also “burned” $90 million from Nobitex-held wallets, in what tech outlet Wired described as an unusual move.

I'm not sure how to feel about this, but when I think that the world MAY be headed to crypto as the main form of currency, it is certainly concerning. The diversification we have now is a little safer, I think.

If a cryptocurrency's source code can be hacked and exposed, then how secure is this monetary "wonder"? Any fears that can be raised against cryptocurrency are good things in my book. I have heard all of the arguments for the supposed benefits of cryptocurrency, but I still feel safer with fiat.

It seems like from its inception cryptocurrency either gets stolen or the owner loses his key or hard drive that whatever it is they need to access their crypto is stored on. I'm thinking of the guy who accidentally threw away a hard drive that had the key to his millions...

To me, cryptocurrency seems like a disaster that will happen, just give it enough time.

There's got to be a way that the crypto assets can be better secured and protected.
