Israel ‘ready to strike Iran’ as US evacuates bases and embassies

Hol

Well-known
Israel is considering launching a military strike against Iran in the coming days without American support, according to Western officials.

The officials said fears of either no deal or a weak deal between Donald Trump, the US president, and the Islamic Republic to curtail its nuclear programme had forced Israeli strategists to consider a unilateral attack against Tehran.

It comes as the UN nuclear watchdog’s board of governors found that Iran had broken its non-proliferation agreement for the first time in 20 years.

The governors demanded that Iran provided answers “without delay” in a long-running investigation into uranium traces found at several locations that Tehran has failed to declare as nuclear sites.

Iran is believed to have enriched uranium to at least 60 per cent, putting it within “sprint” distance of a potential nuclear device.

In response to the ruling, the Islamic Republic said it had no choice but to respond by establishing a new enrichment facility in a “secure location” and “significantly” increasing its production of enriched uranium.

U.S. Evacuating Staff from Iraq; Voluntary Departure of Staff Families Across Mideast

Breitbart News reported earlier Wednesday that President Donald Trump had said he was “much less confident” about the prospect of an Iran nuclear deal, after several weeks of sounding bullish about talks.

The Times of Israel reported:

The US State Department confirms that it is evacuating some of its staff from its embassy in Iraq.

In addition, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has authorized the voluntary departure of military dependents from locations across the Middle East, a US official said. Another US official said that it was mostly relevant to family members located in Bahrain — where the bulk of them are based.
There have been no evacuations from the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, the Times noted.

The IAEA report condemning Iran’s nuclear activities, which came after Tehran’s rejection of the American offer that included halting uranium enrichment, puts the Trump administration in an embarrassing position. Any weak response may have more negative consequences for America’s global prestige. On the other hand, after this condemnation from the IAEA and the potential adoption of the European trio's "snapback" mechanism, this escalation leaves Iran with no political exit except for making significant concessions in the upcoming negotiations in Oman with Washington. Otherwise, military escalation will be certain. As for Israel, Netanyahu and his government seem to be the clearest and most prepared, as they believe that a military solution is the only way to end the Iranian nuclear crisis. Some consider this, if it happens, to be Netanyahu's most important achievement since the October 7 attack and a key step in the New Middle East project. We are now at a decisive moment: Either Iran takes ten steps back (something Khamenei doesn't seem ready to do, at least not yet), or the Trump administration makes even greater concessions to the Iranians (which would render the agreement worthless). Otherwise, with every passing hour we move closer to the most dangerous event in the Middle East. All eyes are on Oman next Sunday, and on Israel before and after Sunday.

CBS News reports that the Trump administration is in discussions with the Pentagon and is exploring options for how to support a possible Israeli military action against Iran's nuclear facilities, including aerial refueling assistance and intelligence sharing. The source added that the US would defend Israel against Iranian ballistic missiles if they were launched at it.

It appears that at this time, the Trump administration will not take an active part in an attack on Iran alongside Israel.

Trump: Israeli strike on Iran not imminent, but could happen

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that an Israeli strike on Iran "could very well happen," but he would not call it imminent, and that he would prefer to avoid conflict with Tehran and reach a peaceful solution over its nuclear program.

Trump's comments came after the UN nuclear watchdog's board of governors declared Iran in breach of its non-proliferation obligations and Tehran announced counter-measures, as an Iranian official said a "friendly country" had warned it of a potential Israeli attack.

US and Iranian officials will hold a sixth round of talks on Tehran's escalating uranium enrichment program in Oman on Sunday, according to US and Omani officials.

Israel has had strong coordination with the US, but Israeli military officials refused to say whether America was pre-updated or fully coordinated into the current attack, coming hours after Washington seemed to suggest it might not be in the loop or approve.
