Hamas Chooses Gaza Military Head Yahya Sinwar to Replace Ismail Haniyeh as Political Leader

Sinwar's selection indicates a continued militant stance by the group and cooperation with Iran

"On Tuesday, the Hamas terror group named Yahya Sinwar, the leader in Gaza and the head of the military wing of the group, as the replacement for Ismail Haniyeh, to head the group’s “political bureau.”
Sinwar has been the leader of Hamas in Gaza since 2017, after Haniyeh moved to Qatar to maintain the political offices in the Gulf country. Sinwar, along with Mohammed Deif, whom Israel killed in an airstrike last month, are considered to be the main planners for the October 7 Hamas invasion of southern Israel.
The group released a statement Tuesday evening naming Sinwar as “head of the movement’s political bureau.”
“The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) announces the selection of Leader Yahya Sinwar as head of the movement’s political bureau, succeeding its martyr and leader Ismail Haniyeh, may Allah have mercy on him,” the statement said.
Hamas said the appointment came “after extensive consultations and deliberations in the movement's leading institutions.” It is believed that this refers to Hamas’ Shura Council, a secretive body composed of officials elected by Hamas members from four chapters: Gaza, the West Bank, the diaspora, and security prisoners in Israel."

"Sinwar’s messianic convictions

Sinwar was described in different reports as hardline, extremist, and even narcissistic, with some reporting psychopathic behavior. Additionally, the leader of the terrorist organization reportedly sports messianic views, viewing himself and Hamas as messengers who would bring upon Allah’s promise for the end of days, named Wa’ed Al-Akhira, in which the entire world would become Muslim, and all heretics would be killed – starting with the alleged ‘liberation of Palestine.’"

From Israel Today:

Hamas has officially recognized its Gaza-based leader, Yahya Sinwar, mastermind of the Oct. 7 terrorist rampage in southern Israel, as its new politburo head, replacing the assassinated Ismail Haniyeh.
The silver lining is that Israel can now take out a second top Hamas leader this time without involving or upsetting a foreign nation.
