Disturbing 'equity cards' steal show at NDP leadership convention

At the 2026 NDP leadership convention in Winnipeg, the federal New Democratic Party distributed colour-coded "equity cards" to delegates as part of a procedural system designed to prioritize speaking order and ensure "equitable representation" from designated 'equity-seeking' groups.

On Monday's live stream, David Menzies and Sheila Gunn Reid discussed the controversial NDP leadership convention in Winnipeg over the weekend that saw delegates arguing over colour-coded "equity cards" to determine the speaking order.

Sheila reacted to the the viral clips of NDP delegates showing their "equity cards" and condemning each other for things like "misgendering."

"I guess they gave out cards to establish where you are on the social justice hierarchy, and for some reason they elected the man who appears to be right at the bottom of the oppression hierarchy, but I'm not a member of the NDP so I don't really know, but then they started getting into disagreements with everybody, some people were 'misgendered,' it was like a Portlandia skit," she said.

This is the kind of agenda that the NDP is famous for.

Windypeg is NDP central right now. They took a beating in the last election federally, even though Wab Kinew was elected provincially (he's NDP). This is the FEDERAL NDP so it has implications across Canada. Manitoba is their stronghold.

So this might just be the Federal version of the NDP shooting themselves in the foot, weakening their stance even as they position themselves as the party for social justice.

That actually should pull votes towards Mark Carney of the Federal Liberals and the current PM.
