'Catastrophic' Pacific Northwest floods leave 100,000 facing evacuation

A state of emergency has been declared and tens of thousands of people have been ordered to leave their homes in Western Washington after historic rain left rivers at record levels across the state.

More than 5 million people were under flood alerts Thursday morning, including in parts of Montana and a small part of Idaho. Ten to 18 inches of rain have fallen over the Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges in the last 72 hours..

At least 300 National Guard troops have been mobilized to the state, and local emergency response crews with boats were activated. Stranded people in vehicles were rescued overnight in Fall City.

The cause of the emergency is a persistent atmospheric river, which has dumped an extraordinary amount of rain on the Pacific Northwest this week, leaving rivers as much as 15 feet above their normal levels.

Dam break in Washington triggers life-threatening flash flood emergency

Thousands of Americans are under a life-threatening flash flood warning after a dam failed in Washington on Monday.

County dispatch reported the breach of the Green River Levee, south of Seattle, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue an alert at 11.51am PT.

A dozen counties, including Clallam, Grays Harbor, Jefferson, King, Kitsap, Lewis, Mason, Pierce, Skagit, Snohomish, Thurston and Whatcom, should brace for flooding over the next several days.

These counties cover much of the Puget Sound region and the Olympic Peninsula, placing thousands of residents on high alert.

The NWS urged locals to move to higher ground immediately, warning: 'Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.'

Folks are scared’: Historic flooding grips Washington, putting entire towns underwater

Washington remains under a state of emergency as days of torrential downpours have pushed rivers to levels never seen before, triggering destructive and historic flooding across the region.

"This is a statewide emergency," Gov. Bob Ferguson said. "We deeply appreciate the first responders who are out there in the field helping Washingtonians as they deal with protecting their homes, businesses, pets, and loved ones."

Nearly 80,000 people have been ordered to evacuate in communities near the Skagit River, which was forecast to crest on Friday at record levels. The Washington National Guard has been activated to support flood response and assist with water rescues.

Mudslides and landslides have occurred across the state, particularly in areas with steep terrain. One landslide shut down Interstate 90 for roughly 24 hours.
