California woman facing felony charges for registering her dog to vote, casting 2 ballots

A California woman illegally registered her dog to vote and cast two ballots under the canine's name, according to officials.

Laura Lee Yourex, 62, of Costa Mesa, faces five felony charges, including perjury, procuring or offering a false or forged document to be filed, casting a ballot when not entitled to vote and registering a non-existent person to vote, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

Yourex submitted mail-in ballots under her dog's name, Maya Jean Yourex, during the 2021 gubernatorial recall election and the 2022 primary, the District Attorney's Office said.

An investigation into the incident revealed she posted about her dog's voting activity on social media.

Yourex faces a maximum sentence of six years in prison if convicted on all counts.

I guess this is taking the idea of pets (i.e., "furkids") being "kids" too far

Was the dog old enough to vote in either "people years" or "dog years?"

Knowing my 🐕‍🦺 discernment about people's character, I suspect If the dogs were allowed to vote without their owners' influence, that the outcome of elections in California and some other places might be different

My daughter went to high school with this person. They were in tall flags together for three years. They have seen each other on
several occasions over the years, and been in touch just recently regarding planning their upcoming class reunion. Deb says this is not
at all reflective of the person she has known her to be. The woman is very upset about this and says it isn't true. She did get an extra ballot a
few years ago and didn't realize it was the dog's name. When she looked at it again, she called the voting registrar's office to let them know that
a mistake had been made............they informed her they didn't make those kinds of mistakes, and failed to do anything. Now she's in trouble. Please,
please, remember that a person is presumed innocent until prove. n guilty. Just because you are accused of something doesn't necessarily mean it is true. This is causing her incredible grief right now.

We understand how these things can happen, as forty years ago, Deb had her driver's license renewed here in California. When the new license came in the mail, it had a picture of a black man on it. She went to the DMV to show them the mistake. They told her they don't make those kinds of mistakes, and they did NOTHING!! She persued trying to get it corrected to no avail. About that time, she moved up to Washington, so she just applied for a new license up there and the problem was solved. Until she moved back down here 25 years later. Then she had to deal with it again. She finally got it straightened out.

Innocent until proven guilty. Tried and convicted in the press isn't IAW the Constitution.

Mistakes get made all the time on DL, and not just in California.
It can be either quick/on-the-spot, or very time-consuming and laborious to fix. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground. These days, when DL are mailed instead of done right-there-on-the-spot and handed across the counter, it always takes more time than it used to to get the actual corrected DL. Although one does get a piece of paper with the correct information.

Nope...... they gave her nothing at DMV

Did they input the correction? If so, they should have taken the old, incorrect DL and given her a piece of paper that would serve as her DL until she got the corrected one.

OTOH, if they refused to correct her DL then they didn't input the corrected information and wouldn't have given her the piece of paper.

Unless does California issue the actual DL on the spot?

In Cali when you go to the dmv office to renew, they give you a piece of paper as a temp license, until the real one comes in the mail.
However, in this case, they REFUSED to admit they made a mistake with the photo, and REFUSED to do anything to correct THEIR mistake.
All they needed to do was re-take her picture and re-issue a new license................but, they wouldn't!!!
