Alexei Navalny, Russia's most famous opposition leader, died on Friday after collapsing and losing consciousness at the penal colony north of the Arctic Circle where he was serving a long jail term, the Russian prison service said.
Navalny, 47, rose to prominence more than a decade ago by lampooning President Vladimir Putin and the Russian elite whom he accused of vast corruption, avarice and opulence.

The Federal Penitentiary Service of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District said in a statement that Navalny "felt unwell" after a walk at the IK-3 penal colony in Kharp, about 1,900 km (1,200 miles) north east of Moscow.
He lost consciousness almost immediately, it said.

"All necessary resuscitation measures were carried out, which did not yield positive results. Doctors of the ambulance stated the death of the convict," the prison service said, adding that causes of death were being established.

If one hasn't read The Gulag Archipelago by Solzenitsyn, it's well worth it. The original Russian-language printing was my textbook for Russian in high school. It was a year later before the English-language edition was released, so no cheating while translating. Taught/tutored to individual students by a Russian Jewish woman, who had escaped from the USSR. The topic was tough, but excellent material, especially considering the Cold War was still raging and MAD. It was a whole lot better than using a stupid textbook because we learned important stuff and had to think, and not just about grammar and vocabulary. I hope I still have that book somewhere . . . if I do, my translation and her edits and comments should be with it.

Quite a few I suspect. Stalin's purges are a very Russian style of eliminating opposition. It's coming.

Konstantin of Inside Russia lives in Tashkent Uzbekistan. G and I follow his YT channel - for years now, and his channel has been turned upside down in the last 24 hours.

Yesterday or the day before he posted 2 tributes to Navalny. They are gone along with a bunch on Putin's main opposition in the election whose candidacy was disallowed. Most of his recent posts/videos are missing.

He and a few other Russian expats went to a memorial site to pay their respects to Navalny, had a run in with Russian officers who were there "observing" who showed up. Uzbekistan is theoretically separate from Russia but obviously not separate enough.

The ex pat community of Russians there are quite nervous actually because of Putin's threats and certain ways Russia has been manipulating Uzbekistan's govt.

Konstantin saw it and plowed ahead to pay his respects. He said something on one of the missing videos about the encounter with the secret police or whatever they were, and what happened just afterwards. He was pretty sure his channel would take a hit, and it has.

He posted on his channel a short about that, and a longer video that I can't find. YouTube obeys Russian and Chinese commands - the dust up with the piano player in London vs a bunch of Red Chinese is another example.

But Russia plays for keeps. Making the piano player vs China a funny meme and Konstantin's battle to honour Navalny a dangerous thing.

I'm actually concerned about Konstantin, he is a very popular face for the expat Russian community and a gathering point for dissidents. He is a genial, intelligent man who loves his country and hates the invasion of Ukraine. He is a self professing Christian who isn't fond of the Russian Orthodox church authorities but tries to follow God in spite of the church. He is a plain spoken truthful person. He is courageous and doesn't back down from a fight.

He ended up becoming an international voice, a critic of Putin. He knows the risks. Navalny is one of his heroes.

Pray for him please. I don't think Putin will go for him yet but I can see the signs coming of a Stalin type purge of opposition because that is who Putin is at the core.

Pray that if he thinks he is saved and isn't that he would understand salvation fully, and get saved. You never know with Russians how much they understand of things like salvation. It all depends on how they were taught, brought up or influential people in their lives.

USSR, just like KGB, never died. Government/Communist Party intrinsically tied to Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), as it's the State church and President Putin is the State head of it (just like the reigning monarch of England is the State head of the Church of England).

FWIW, Orthodox churches are against the Pope, although they do pray to the saints and Mary. The Orthodox I know are saved, but depending on where living, must be very careful about what they say and do, and who knows. There are a lot of secret Orthodox living under hard persecution, and if lucky, have an underground church or maybe even a Bible (or part of one, or access to same).

Konstantin's YT channel is back to normal. I suppose the FSB or SVR (the new versions of the KGB) whichever it was just sent him a message via their ability to control what YouTube allows. Live is rough for Russians - the ones who fled and the ones caught behind Putin's fence.
