Venezuelan army captains urge military to stand up to ‘dictator’ Maduro

Two Venezuelan Army captains urged the military on Tuesday to stand up to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro after the president was announced as the winner of Sunday’s election despite evidence allegedly pointing to a change in power.

According to Fox News, Edmundo Gonzalez, Venezuela’s opposition candidate, and Opposition Leader Maria Corina Machado claimed that they had obtained tally sheets that indicated Gonzalez won double the votes of Maduro in enough districts to win the election. Fox News reported that the National Electoral Council announced Maduro as the winner of Sunday’s election despite leaked polling reportedly showing more support for Gonzalez than for Maduro and the United Socialist Party of Venezuela.

According to Fox News, Maduro has faced claims since 2013 that he and the United Socialist Party of Venezuela have ruled the country as a dictatorship, ultimately leading to a boycott by opposition parties in 2018 and a coordinated effort to unite behind Gonzalez in Sunday’s election.

ABC News reported that Monday’s controversial announcement resulted in thousands of opposition supporters gathering Tuesday in protest against the current Venezuelan government.

US recognizes opposition candidate Edmundo González as winner of Venezuela's presidential election

The U.S. government on Thursday recognized Venezuelan opposition candidate Edmundo González as the winner of the South American country's presidential election, discrediting the results announced by electoral authorities who declared President Nicolás Maduro the victor.

Please note: The above video is from a previous report

"Given the overwhelming evidence, it is clear to the United States and, most importantly, to the Venezuelan people that Edmundo González Urrutia won the most votes in Venezuela's July 28 presidential election," U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

The National Electoral Council declared Maduro the winner of Sunday's highly anticipated election, but the president's main challenger, González, and opposition leader Maria Corina Machado have said they obtained more than two-thirds of the tally sheets that each electronic voting machine printed after polls closed.

They said the release of the data on those tallies would prove Maduro lost.
