US Postal Service Plans to Cut 10,000 Jobs: What to Know

Postmaster General Louis DeJoy plans to cut 10,000 jobs and slash billions from the U.S. Postal Service budget, working in coordination with Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, according to a letter sent to Congress on Thursday.

DOGE will assist the USPS in tackling "big problems" at the $78 billion-a-year agency, which has struggled financially in recent years. The agreement also includes the General Services Administration (GSA) to help identify and implement "further efficiencies."

Why It Matters

The USPS, which employs approximately 640,000 workers, posted a $9.5 billion loss in the fiscal year ending September 2024. This latest effort is part of a broader attempt to curb costs as the agency grapples with calls for privatization and potential restructuring under President Donald Trump's administration.

The planned staff reductions will occur through a voluntary early retirement program, first announced in January, which has now expanded to specify the number of employees expected to leave.

DOGE head Elon Musk, during a virtual appearance at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference: "I think logically we should privatize anything that can reasonably be privatized. I think we should privatize the Post Office and Amtrak, for example...We should privatize everything we possibly can."

There is something seriously wrong when it takes two weeks to get a piece of first class mail from one part of the Twin Cities to another part of the Twin Cities :furious:  :apost: :ban:

Maybe I should start a Bicycle Express, with stations every few miles or so, just to serve the Twin Cities. Overnight or at least two-day wouldn't be a problem. Or even bus-express. Mass transit here is actually pretty reliable.

NO junk mail.

The problem with privatizing the mail service is that, if privatized, profit becomes a motive. Mail service is by its nature unprofitable. Mail needs to be delivered to places where no business could afford to operate. It's a public service. And as such is a government responsibility to the people. All the people. Not just those who live in profitable, populated areas; but those who live in unprofitable isolated areas as well. Every American should be given reliable, prompt mail service.

Part of the problem comes in that the people they hire are not interested in working hard. A Christian brother of mine is a postal supervisor and says that half the people in his location just aren't interested in what they do. And the local management is hopeless. The place needs to be cleaned out, keeping the good workers and replacing the bad ones. Unfortunately, the union will prevent that if it can.

This is my thought.
As different departments in government are being cleaned out, it's inevitable that the vast majority of government departments and positions are going to be replaced with AI.

By privatizing Mail service, the government doesn't need Mail carriers delivering mail as we have been accustomed to.

It's one less need to have people working in the government which in a way lines up with the philosophy of the Conservative to have "less government".

I think where privatizing may be leading to is that Government will no longer be used as a service for the people, but strictly be for governing.

Merrium Webster on governing:

serving to govern: such as

a: directing and making decisions for a country, organization, etc.

b: directing or guiding the actions of someone or something

especially : guiding the ideas, actions, decisions, etc. of a political leader or body

Something came to me.
I'm always thinking 😆

My quick initial thought about privatizing mail was that mail delivery could be done by a private sector and likely have to pay for mail delivery.

But as I thought about it, that doesn't necessarily have to be the case.

As I thought about it, for a long time there's been a gradual moving away from using in person mail delivery already.

For instance, years ago Social Security checks stopped being sent by regular mail delivery and changed over to direct deposit into bank accounts or the use of the government's Direct Express.
It was for " security" reasons.

Then over time private sectors and businesses began to express concerns about "security" and began to give the option but encourage having our bills be sent to us by email or text rather than paper bills.
Even some retail stores began to give the option of a paper receipt or email receipt.

I always declined the digital bills and receipts because I like having my personal ready accessable records and then there are hackers that can get personal information online.

Then came the QR code options to pay for things and many Renters started to not accept cash anymore for rent payments and began to encourage paying rent online through QR codes instead of checks and money orders.

Where I'm going with this is the it's already been in progress a little at a time to move away from paper mail.
And as it gets to where it's going, everything is going digital.
Even personal mail like from family living far away, will eventually have to use Email rather than traditional mail or "snail mail" as it's called when not using digital Email.

Privatizing could mean governments won't be using traditional means using Mail Carriers to deliver mail but could end up using digital means like email or text to deliver mail. Using Technology to deliver mail.

If this is what this means by privatizing it makes sense because as one of the goals for a One World Government is would be to make everything go to "The Internet of All things" because it's better for keeping track of everything and monitoring everything.

Maybe I'm wrong but using the pattern of everything being gradually done by digital means, it's possible our Mail is going to go that route because the infrastructure to do it is already there and "it's more secure and convenient" as we have been told.

My late father was a old school Dem and retired postal carrier, and I am absolutely sure he would put on blinders of full support to keep all postal employees regardless of waste, fraud, laziness, poor performance, over staffing, etc. I cannot support keeping the roster of mail workers untouched while tax money is wasted over and over and over again. It's the right thing to do.

Keep in mind that DOGE isn't just about cutting unnecessary spending and uprooting bad government employees. DOGE means
Department Of Government Efficiency
It's position is being also used to change the way government has been operating to make it "more efficient",

Efficient:
performing or functioning in the best possible manner with the least waste of time and effort; having and using requisite knowledge, skill, and industry; competent; capable:
a reliable, efficient assistant.

AI has been seen as more efficient than humans because AI can get the same job it may take several people to do, in less time and in a timely manner, being more productive and faster than the way a human can.

It explains how the US must dominate in the global race with AI and why Stargate is in the process of structuring thousands of Data centers across the US to be used for the increasing adaptation of AI into the government systems.
DOGE is preparing for that.
If we are paying attention it's obvious.

Random thought taken by this thread's participants. I think you each have hit on things that seem different but not oh so different. My apologies for the intrusion. From pony express to people sorting mail with increditable speed and accuracy to modern machinery tasked with the sorting of first-class parcels then delivery by hand, America has transitioned to efficiency over employment. The postal worker was honored for their dedication regardless of the elements. I remember my parents handing a gift of food or treat with an added card to our postal worker aka postman on the occasions of Thanksgiving and Christmas. They knew their postman's name. Mail remained an important part of my parent's daily life, looking forward to what might be delivered that day. My father was especially enamored with mail, and so, when junk mail entered the stream of mail, he welcomed that as well. For those still young (:)) postcards were a brilliant concoction for letting family and friends know where you were at for a bargain at 3 cents postage. Our Postal Service was thriving and so was its coffers. Our elected folks saw an opportunity to steal from the USPS's coffers and wasted no time in doing so. This began the ever-increasing cost of postage and the creation of the Forever Stamp.

Today, digital statements, offers, and all else hold the attention of most everyone; how convenient? I have the USPS app that allows me to view my incoming mail and packages. This option taken after financial statements did not arrive, costing me financially. Convenient, yes, as I am able to view what is expected each day, transfer the address of mail delivery or hold my mail for a period of time when needed. Could AI handle these changes without mistake? I do not know, but AI will not be held to the accountably as a human would be held and punished if necessary. I am constantly reminded of my option to receive digital billing, health updates, and always offers that I did not ask about during phone-tree AI or letters. I hate ads, all ads. This is a hard thing for AI as it wants "to make ads personal to my interests",yet offers nothing of my God's words. Hmmm?

I am pretty sure that my previous mailperson has either retired or quit and I am now dealing with a new and care-free postperson. With a new, temporary USPS approved mailbox, this worker chooses to flip up with the back of their hand the door, which most often does not close the door. I have written a polite directive of securing the door and taped it inside the door. The postperson still casually flips the door without a care. Could it be motivatived by the information of their soon lose of employment? Perhaps. Different online stores using the USPS as their deliverers at a discounted cost to the store only decreases the USPS profit. A planned demolition.

The future will become "personal" as digital images will continuingly intrude our vision in the form of ads with music and voices of AI. Our sleep will be attacked with subliminal messaging. If the Holy Spirit is not in a person, in my opinion, the person's final resistance for independence will be extinguished.

Until this time, the idea of locally organic mail delivery is attractive to me. How much better would we learn the names and personas of our neighbor's? Opportunity to offer the Blessed Hope? Yeah :). What a play against our enemy who wants to separate us to actually draw us to the unsaved?! And, yes, I realize the demonic's interest in this opportunity, too.

When everything is digital, big brother will know everything, AND WILL BE ABLE TO CHANGE ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING.

Imagine AI/TPTB changing your lab results, so you don't know there's a huge problem and so don't go back to the doc or don't stop/start taking a medication(s) and/or supplement(s).

Imagine AI/TPTB changing an email from someone saying he or she wants to get married, to saying he or she wants to split up.

Imagine AI/TPTB changing a bill so you don't pay enough or on time, so you incur a late fee and maybe get a utility shut off or get black-listed by a grocery or transportation service.

And a lot of nice traditions will go away.

No more pretty Christmas cards with a hand-written note and The Gospel sent to family, friends, neighbors, Pastors, church workers/volunteers, etc.

No more lottery tickets in Christmas and birthday cards.

No more hand-written thank you and apology cards.

No more hand written love letters between spouses, engaged couples, and serious-but-not-yet-engaged couples when they're separated by work, school, deployments, missions, etc.
