We are seeing the regions forming.

Once military equipment is being moved around the world, its almost impossible for others to not know it. OPSEC nowadays is keeping a mission secret before it starts to unfold. Plus, touting what we are moving in place should be seen as a deterrent for our enemies.

Yep the internet has pretty much done away with Opsec. Still young military types are so married to social media they find ways around the restrictions. I can remember back in the day one of the carriers actually had forum type set up where anybody could talk with the sailors onboard. I ended up with a contact that left the ship in Spain as she was being a long time and needed a PCS. It is harder now but still lots of places like FB have base pages. Mostly old timers go there but once in a while people on base or headed that way will reach out. The other side is that there are self appointed experts who have figured out access to online flight tracking. The problem is most of them don't have a clue to what they are seeing. Sometimes and E-6 is up, sometimes and E-4 is up, sometimes several of both are up. So when they see them of course their idea is that we are about to go to war. I used to try to inform folks that just because you see it on a computer screen does not mean something bad is about to happen. Planes do after maintenance test hops all the time. They do cross country training flights as well. Right now the talk is the KC-135 tankers but no mention of the KC-46 tankers. Also what few people know is such planes can be reconfigured for troop or equipment transport in a matter of hours or less. When I was doing my less than authorized international MAC flights several of the planes I rode on were refuelers but configured for transport so they were filled with pallets not fuel tanks.

Sadly such folks that come up with all manner of insane speculation on what planes are flying and why has gotten the attention of the military. Hence most of what we see is not always significant to some kind of mission. Nearly all tactical aircraft fly with their transponders turned off so we see far less than what is actually flying. I live close enough to NAS Whidbey Island that I often hear Super Hornets and now F-35s going over the house but when I look to see if they show up on ADS-B Exchange online or my own personal 1090 tracking set up on my computer they don't show up. Simply means they are running without their transponders. Anyway just as it was back in my days before the internet, OpSec was never really good. For instance while in Japan, people there knew who the new incoming squadrons were by going out in town to the knick knack shops and seeing which logos were suddenly on sale. Drunk young troops were never tight lipped when they were to be rotating back to the states.

So I am guessing that a lot of those refuelers are not necessarily heading to Europe and points east for refueling missions. Many are likely carrying equipment and are likely to return in short order as there are a number of refuelers assigned permanently to various bases in Europe, places like the UK, Germany and Italy. Then there are the many training missions that do international flying so that the crews are well trained before they are actually needed.

I can say it is now much harder to track things down but still not impossible. Even the one carrier headed to the Arabian Gulf is trackable online. It is not real time info but usually within a 12 to 24 hour time frame old. Still so many who have never stepped foot on any military base come on the internet like they are some kind of subject matter experts making all kinds of wild claims. In some ways that kind of activity actually plays well to OpSec because 4 or 5 or 6 different views on what is being seen and none of it matching up makes it much harder for the non military types to know what is going on. I would not really worry about Military OpSec being compromised. It has been to some degree going back to WWII and will with the help of the internet will continue into the future. Personally I have given up on dealing with this new age of so called experts. Most of them are usually so far off the mark but they get followers who know as little or less about things military, scientific, etc. So they will be around for a good long while.
