Police chiefs have issued a rare public rebuke to ministers over plans to cut prison sentences, warning the changes could trigger a 6 per cent surge in crime.
The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) said it was bracing for thousands more offences to be committed immediately after the Sentencing Bill puts more offenders on the streets rather than behind bars.
Plans proposed under the bill to ease the prison overcrowding crisis include not imprisoning anyone sentenced to less than 12 months and releasing criminals earlier. It will allow prisoners to be freed as early as one third of the way through their sentences, or halfway for more serious offences.
